As far as the templars go, from most of the research I've done on it is that they were originally good and Catholic but were infiltrated shortly (by guess who) after and then became occultic and was a catalyst and backdrop for Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ.  That's the very short version of it though.  It's possible they were occultic from the start according to some sources.  I think it's even possible (not likely though) they were never occultic and they were just smeared by people with agendas but that's the minority opinion but who really knows.
