Hello everyone. My mom went on a trip to my country and I asked her if she could dig around for some pre-Vatican II stuff in the archbishopric. In the end my grand aunt, who is in her late 80's gave me a 1962 missal in Spanish. Yay! :dancing-banana: And my aunt, who is younger and in her 60's gave me 1962 missal in French that she used in her catholic school. Now I can go to mass and practice French at the same time :cool: In case any of you are interested, she is now a new ager. Those lovely fruits of Vatican II! /sarcasm. But let's get to the point. Now that I have that and a new bible (I found some evolution heresies in the footnotes of Genesis in the extremely protestant friendly bible that I have) I asked my mom if she could find me a book that has the little office in Spanish. I have the 1965 version of it and it is very small, only a pamphlet, and has no psalms or anything. I want the real deal, and I need it because I am invested in the brown scapular and as of right now I am trying to get the first promise that our blessed mother made. So what should I tell my mom to look for? What does the right version say?

Greetings! Praying the Little Office of the BVM brings so many graces down upon a person. You will love saying it! I do not know of one in Spanish, but here is a softcover from Mother of Our Savior Catholic Goods in Latin/English :

Even if the words are not understood by you when reciting the prayers, if you pray to the Holy Ghost first, He will let you know what they mean. You may not know intellectually what the prayers mean but you will eventually have a spiritual understanding. Anyway, you will probably understand many of the Latin words once you become familiar with them. Also, the Romance languages have their roots in Latin.

Of course praying the traditional prayers gives great glory to God and to the Blessed Virgin Mary! They understand Latin.

I am so happy for you that you have decided to pray the Little Office. It is an absolute treasure.

You can search online for instructions on how to read the Office. Be sure to begin with the "Prayer before the Office" on page 23.

Thanks a lot memento. So basically I only need to get one that has psalms and hymns and is actually a book?

That is correct. If you buy one of those books, everything is included. I hope that you realize that with the Little Office, you do not pray all 150 psalms throughout the week. It is much shorter than the Breviary and it might take less than an hour to pray all of the hours each day. Matins and Lauds take the longest.

Ask a traditional priest or nun for guidance if you are not sure what to do. I have confidence though, that if you take your time studying the book you will be able to figure out what to pray and when. When I first began, I made the mistake of saying every prayer consecutively instead of saying the prayers just for that day or particular season. Eventually I made notations in my book and praying the Little Office became very easy and may I say, very rewarding. While we give glory to God and honor to Our Lady we benefit ourselves. As is it said, "God shall not be outdone."
