  • St. Bernard, Doctor mellifluus, amicus Sponsi, Virginis Matris præco mirificus, "the Mellifluous Doctor, the friend of the Spouse, the marvelous herald of the Virgin Mother," as the Breviarium Monasticuм acclaims him (20 August, ant. ad Benedictus), has inspired countless generations throughout the centuries with his sermons anointed with holy unction and founded upon solid doctrine.

I shall endeavor, by God's holy grace, to bring you some Sermons he preached during Lent, hoping that the celestial wisdom of St. Bernard will help your endeavor to exercise yourself in the prayers, fasts, vigils, good works, and other penances that Holy Mother Church so magnificently bids us to observe in these sacred days.

Also, do not forget to check out Cardinal Schuster's commentaries upon the Lenten Masses, which I plan to upload throughout Lent as well.

  • Here is a Sermon he preached at commencement of the sacred Quadragesimal solemnities, taken from St. Bernard's Sermons for the Seasons & Principal Festivals of the Year: Translated from the Original Latin by a Priest of Mount Melleray, (Vol. II.; Westminster, MD: The Carroll Press, 1950).

  • Thank you Hobbledehoy, this is very humbling. I shall be reflecting on this, to be sure.

"Therefore the fast of the flesh is the head's anointing, and the hunger of the flesh is the head's refection; yea, I might even call it the soul's anointing, since it serves to heal my spiritual wounds, and to soothe my troubled conscience."

    So true...
