Latin Mass Missals

  • For years I’ve been looking for an affordable missal for Mass and daily reading as well.
The Roman Missal sold through Angelus is $60 minimum and up. I just can not afford that high of a price. I’ve seen some missals like The St Andrews but they are expensive also, and even missals in terrible shape are asking really high prices. I am looking for under $30 and I did find a 1962 St Andrews Bible Missal and a St Joseph Continuous Sunday Missal 1961 in my price range but did not know if these are tainted with any errors.
Does anyone have any info on these or other vintage missals that I may want to avoid or are suitable for purchase?

You could try St. Bonaventure Publications and see if they will give you a wholesale price for a Saint Andrew missal.
I think the cost will still be about $40.00, though.

  • Carissima - you could always just purchase the sspx 1962 missalette, and then use your douay rheams bible index of readings to read the readings for each sunday.  The readings will be the readings of the old calendar.

    Awesome link thanks!
I did search Cathinfo by typing in ‘mass missal’ and other key words and was flooded with random posts that had nothing to do with that search, not sure what happened. So I decided to post a new thread.
Googling missals to help with choosing was limited on information also.

  • Carissima - if you are looking for a daily liturgical reading activity, the missal may not be what you are looking for.  You will find that there is a lot of repetition for throughout the week, and the variations became overly familiar for me on a week day basis for how I made use of the missal.  If you want a daily reading, you may want to just make use of the psalms more.  I am not trying to discourage you from getting a full missal, but if that doesn't materialize, don't worry, there are many other ways.  You can download onto one page the cycle of the divine office clerics and monastics use of the psalms, and then just use your bible to make use of those psalms to whatever degree you want to make use of them.  That way you do not have to purchase/own more devotional books to accomplish a desired daily read/prayer with the church.

Also a very good idea PG thanks!
I remember once finding on eBay a small book of daily psalms. I didn’t purchase but perhaps I can find again. A psalm for everyday would be great meditation helper.

There is this psalm book for $12.00.  I think it is the confraternity translation, and it is probably the best one out there.

And, the neat thing about that psalm book is that I think is ordered in the sequence of the divine office.  So, you do not have to flip around.  I was thinking about getting it a few months ago.  I probably still should.  It would be so easy for travel purposes like I think you mentioned.  Give us an update as to how you end up liking it, and how you are using it.
