Keeping the Feast of the Circuмcision

    • This year on January 1, I had an opportunity to attend a midnight Mass preceded by a Holy Hour at 11pm.  I was cautioned that this was a heresy born out of Americanism, merging the secular New Years with the Holy Day (I am in the US). 

    Can anyone point me to resources which may help me understand this position or refute it as an opinion? 

    I personally had thought the Holy Hour and midnight Mass was started by Pius XII? but I have no idea where I can find out for sure.  I do not believe the warning to be valid, but would like to have more than my opinion to fall back on

    I took the following prayers from The Layman's Ritual 1944.  The instructions at the top of the first page indicates they are offered before the Blessed Sacrament so a Holy Hour would be what they are referring to.  Mass was offered immediately after in our church every year prior to Vat II.  We still had some priests who offered for a while after.

    As for being heresy, what better time to be in church making reparation than on a night when so many mortal sins are being committed.

    • Our SSPX church had a Holy Hour from 23:30 to 00:30 with the Te Deum sung before Midnight and the Veni Creator sung after, in order to gain the plenary indulgences attached to them. It was a massive turn out and outstanding singing from a large part of the congregation. Very edifying. But a midnight Mass? No, I've never come across that.
