A Roman Catholic priest who worked with street children in Brazil has been shot dead in the northeast of the country, say police.

Ramiro Ludueno, 64, from Spain was shot as he walked home in the city of Recife and died of his wounds in hospital.

He had lived in Brazil for 34 years and according to a colleague was a popular figure who had no enemies.

Local police gave no motive for the attack but said it may have been an attempted robbery.

The AFP news agency reported that a boy under the age of 18 had been arrested and was being held in custody.

Friar Ramiro had been working with an organisation providing help and support to children and young people living on the streets in the region.

Fernando Gomes, the co-ordinator of the street children project, said he could think of no reason for the attack.

"He got along well with everyone," he said.

The question is whether he was a martyr.

If you're shot while going about your daily business, and you don't choose to be a martyr, or you're not killed for your faith, you're not one.

He could have been shot by an angry drug baron. Just as Fr. Leslie was killed by a marauder in S.A recently. It's a tragedy and he was a wonderful priest, but it doesn't make him a martyr.
