  • In addition to commemorating the extraordinary jubilee of mercy in 2016, the Church in Hungary is celebrating the 1700th anniversary of the birth of St. Martin of Tours in Szombathely.

Famed for sharing his cloak with a beggar, St. Martin is “the saint par excellence of charity and of works of mercy,” said Bishop András Veres of Szombathely, the president of the nation’s episcopal conference.

In their pastoral letter for the anniversary, the nation’s bishops stated that St. Martin also “fought for the liberty of the Church and for the purity of the Magisterium,” “lived poverty even as a bishop,” and was “resolutely committed to the defense of the true faith and of the Church, confronting, if necessary, his brother bishops and those responsible for politics.”
