  • September's dedication is apparently less famous than many of the other months.

I think it's "Seven Sorrows" but can anyone else confirm that?

    Thanks.

  • Yes.  I can confirm this.  September is the month of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary

On the Medal:  Say an Act of Contrition.  O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

At each sorrow medal, mention the sorrow.  You may recite the meditation provided.  Say the Hail Mary on each bead.

The First Sorrow: The Prophecy of Simeon
When Mary and Joseph present the infant Jesus in the temple, Simeon predicts that a "sword" (of sorrow) will pierce Mary's soul.

The Second Sorrow: The flight into Egypt
When King Herod orders the death of all male children age two or younger, Mary and Joseph flee to Egypt with the infant Jesus.

The Third Sorrow: The loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple
Mary and Joseph search for the child Jesus for three days, finding Him at last — after agonizing sorrow — in the temple.

The Fourth Sorrow: Mary meets Jesus carrying the cross
As Jesus makes His way to Calvary, condemned to crucifixion, He meets His mother, Mary. He is bruised, derided, cursed and defiled and her sorrow is absolute as Jesus drags His own cross up the hill of His crucifixion.

    The Fifth Sorrow: The Crucifixion
The cruelest violence, insults and indignities the Son of God was not spared! Behold his poor mother standing there, hardly willing to breath the air, dissolved in an ocean of tears as she watched him slowly die in agony!  Her tortured heart pierced through with burning swords of unimaginable pain and sorrow for her beloved Son.  If not for the grace of God, Mary surely would have died a thousand deaths that day.

The Sixth Sorrow: Mary receives the body of Jesus
Jesus is taken down from the cross and His body is placed in Mary's arms. The passion and death are over, but for His mother, grief continues. She holds His body in her arms.

The Seventh Sorrow: The body of Jesus is placed in the tomb
The body of Jesus is laid in the tomb. The most tragic day in history ends, Mary alone in sorrow, awaiting the Resurrection.

Last Three Beads:  Three Hail Marys are said at the end in honor of the Tears of Our Sorrowful Mother.

    Closing Prayer:
O God at whose Passion, according to the prophecy of Simeon, a sword of sorrow pierced the most sweet soul of the glorious Virgin and Mother Mary; mercifully grant, that we, who honor with devotion her Sorrows, may obtain the happy fruit of Thy Passion: who livest and reignest, with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, world without end.  Amen

Say one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory be for the intentions of the Holy Father to gain the indulgences attached.

“The Faithful who, during the month of September, perform their devotions in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sorrowing, may gain:
    An indulgence of 5 years once, on any day of the month;
A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if they persevere daily in this devout practice throughout the entire month.

  • Always has been for me.

If anyone has the Servite Manual, Behold Thy Mother, it's too late to do the devotions for the 7 Fridays prior to Her feast but there is also the devotion for the 7 days prior starting on Sept 8th.

I didn't see where your link shows any monthly dedication.

Of course, even if I missed it, then the site was apparently indicating the dedications according to the liturgical calendar according to the Novus Ordo rite.  Matthew's question concerned the dedication of September in the liturgical calendar according to the Catholic rite.

  • Although I've always believed that Sept was dedicated to Our Sorrowful Mother, the book by Father Lasance, "My Prayer Book" 1908, pg 165 under Sanctify the Month states that Sept is dedicated to The Holy Cross.

  • After reading about what Fr. Lasance says about the dedication of the Month of September, I am wondering if the various dedications are officially promulgated by the Church or if they should be considered pious exercises according to local customs.

It just seems strange that, if the Month of September is not specifically dedicated to Our Sorrowful Mother, the Racolta would specify that:

"#381:  The faithful who, during the month of September, perform their devotions in honor of the B.V.M. Sorrowing may gain:

    An indulgence of 5 years once, on any day of the month;

A Plenary indulgence on the usual condition, if they persevere daily in this devout practice through the entire month."

  • Here are some devotions with indulgences attached direct from the 1857 Raccolta (the first one printed in English)
Note the beautiful Act of Contrition before the chaplet.

  • No.  We do not have any other devotions other than the chaplet.  This is the family devotion we have chosen which, I think, complies with the spirit and letter of the law.  We say the Seven Sorrows chaplet after our family rosary each evening during September.

the addition of Sts. Gabriel and Raphael are from the new calendar. However September 29 has  been dedicated to St Michael. It used to be refered to as Michaelmas.

It's still just one day of the month.  Why did you think this meant that the month of September was dedicated to him?

There were other dates listed on the website for September as well:

September 8 - The Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IN NATIVITATE B. MARIÆ VIRG.)
September 14 - The Exaltation of the Holy Cross (IN EXALTATIONE SANCTÆ CRUCIS)
September 21 - St. Matthew, Apostle (S. MATTHÆI, APOSTOLI ET EVANGELISTÆ)

I'm just curious what made you think that it was St. Michael?

  • There have been books written which I don't have digitalized information but here is information from a thread in French which outlines the holiness and goodness of St Michael where every day in September and more is covered.
