  • The Act of Charity:
O my God, I love thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul because Thou art all good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

I was reading this today and the thought came to me that when many people say this prayer they are lying, even when I say it myself. I know that I should love God with my whole heart and soul, but though I do love God I also love other things in this world; I am not like a great saint who only loves God. And I know I should love my neighbor as myself but I know I fall short of this also. I do try to forgive all those who have injured me so I am good there, but I wonder.

If I fall short of the ideals mentioned in this prayer am I a liar for praying the Act of Charity?
    R.I.P.
Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • No Matto, you're not a liar. Remember the maxim of the Church; Lex orandi lex credendi or Lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi which pretty much means;  how we worship (pray) reflects and guards or dictates what we believe and determines how we will live our lives.

So if we don't pray, we can never grow in love of God and neighbor.

"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

  • I understand this line of thinking. I've often wondered while praying to St Joseph, for example, do I really "never weary of contemplating [him] and Jesus asleep in [his] arms"?! But then I think that wanting to is almost as good as doing.
