This year, December 8th falls on a Sunday.

So far, I've seen two different 'traditional' calendars, which have two days on this one.  And the difference seems to come from the 1962 missal, but one source says it was Pius XII who made the change (not John XXIII).

One calendar, using the pre-1954 rubrics and missal rules and therefore calendar, has the Immaculate Conception on December 8th, and an octave following (as it does every year), such that Monday is the second day in the Octave (but not a holy day of obligation), etc.  The Mass on Sunday is of the Immaculate Conception (the one Padre Pio memorized and said every day without using any books or Mass cards), and the Second Sunday of Advent is commemorated.  That means the Collect, Secret and Postcommunion from the 2nd Sunday of Advent are read also, but first are read those for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Also, the Gospel from the 2nd Sunday of Advent is read for the Last Gospel instead of Chapter 1, 1-14 of St. John.

More commemorations occur during the week on the days of the Octave, which are similar to what happens with the Feria days, but not identical.

The other calendar displaces the Immaculate Conception with the 2nd Sunday of Advent, moving the Holy Day of Obligation to Monday, December 9th, and eliminating the Octave.  This is what the 1962 Missal does as well.  So the SSPX using the '62 missal would likely use this plan instead of the pre-1954 one, above. One comment I heard was the idea that this is being used as an opportunity to take up a second collection (two days with collections instead of one).

I'm wondering if anyone is having a potluck and conference or anything on this day this year?  In Garden Grove there is a pancake breakfast planned, including the annual raffle drawing with first prize of $7,000.

You can still buy tickets!! (ourladyhelpofchristians.US)

  • At the chapel in Phoenix, AZ they will be celebrating the feast of the Immaculate Conception on Sunday.  On the CMRI calendar that I have it shows the feast on the 9th.

I hope it IS on Sunday.  I usually cannot get the day or any portion of it off from work, and it is a two hour drive, so I've not been to Mass on this Holy Day except for once.
     :incense:
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.
