How to dispose of damaged sacramentals?
« on: November 18, 2023, 12:46:31 PM »
I found a box containing damaged religious items containing damaged pictures, statues and even a crucifix. I have so many religious articles on display that even if these were in good condition, I wouldn't have space to display them. As they are damaged, I very much doubt I would be able to give them away. It's my understanding that burning is the proper way to dispose of items, but many of these are not "burnable" unless you maybe had access to an incinerator. I've also been told that burying them is a solution, but I don't have access to a spot to do that either. Are there other options? I don't just want to throw them in my garbage bin, but I don't know what to do with them.

Somethings will only burn if you throw some kind of comburent on it, like alcohol or gasoline.

I once heard that you could also throw sacramentals in running water, like on a steep river, but I don't know if this is correct.

Take the items to a Catholic cemetery. Thry regularly bury old items, like altar missals with broken bindings. Around my area, the cemeteries will put sacramentals into the casket for sanctuary items and bury them
