  • A student in my catechism class asked about whether it was a sin to chew the Host when receiving Holy Communion. Is it a sin? Thank you.

  • No.

The Greek used in John 6 for "eat" is "trogo."  It means literally to gnaw or chew.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • It may not be a sin to chew the Host HOWEVER there are many things that aren't sins that we still don't do.
In the 1940's & '50's the nuns taught us NOT to chew the Host out of reverence for Our Lord, because  a particle could remain in the mouth (much like spinich between the teeth)  longer than 15 minutes and later be discarded (like getting attached to gum etc)
"Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and them that hate Him flee from before His Holy Face"  Psalm 67:2[/b]

  • If the host is made correctly, it should dissolve.  For those in the New Order, maybe their host are made differently.

If it's not made correctly it doesn't matter what you do with it because Our Lord will not be present.  The church requires proper Form, Matter and Intent.  The addition of yeast, sugar, salt, any grain other than wheat etc invalidates the proper matter requirement.  Even leaving the lid on the ciborium during the Consecration will invalidate the Consecration.
Using ordinary bread, a hot dog bun or danish is NOT Holy Communion.
It's sad to see how much has been forgotten.

I remember seeing a picture of a Novus Ordo procession where the priest held up a dinner roll which he consecrated. I think it was in either Austria or Germany.

I hope sometimes that these are just Protestants (Anglicans', etc)... Then I wonder what difference it would make- none.

  • That's not even valid matter. So no, Christ isn't present there.

It has to be unleavened bread made of pure wheat flour.

I thought the Eastern Rites use leavened bread, don't they?

The nuns did say that, and they were wrong.  Our Lord said "Take and eat."  He meant it.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

I'm curious is there a certain type of wheat it must be? Hard, soft, white, red? Secondly is the whole grain used or is it white flour?

What did they do before modern transportation to bring wheat to places where it's difficult to grow?

  • Orthodox do use leavened bread.

It doesn't matter about the type of wheat. It just has to be only wheat and water. For people with the allergy they remove the part of the wheat which causes the allergy but it's still only wheat and water.

  • Chewing is never a good idea. Why not pray and let it slowly dissolve? It's our Lord after all.
