  • Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems there used to be a kind of mathematical certainty associated with various types of penance.

How do we know if we have done enough?

    Can you ever do enough?

I exposed AB Vigano's public meetings with Crowleyan Satanist Dugin so I ask protection on myself family friends priest, under the Blood of Jesus Christ and mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary! If harm comes to any of us may that embolden the faithful to speak out all the more so Catholics are not deceived.

  • Are you talking about penance as assigned by a priest, or personal penances?

Obviously, you do those assigned by a priest to the letter commanded. I would think personal penances are at the discretion of the individual and their confessor.
"Be not therefore solicitous for tomorrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof." [Matt. 6:34]

"In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin." [Ecclus. 7:40]

"A holy man continueth in wisdom as the sun: but a fool is changed as the moon." [Ecclus. 27:12]

I know that I do not do enough.

I could never think of penance in terms of mathematical certainty, like one days fast equals 5 mins off purgatory. We have to let God do the calculations so, really, we can never know how much we really need.

But even in the remote possibilty that I am going straight to Heaven (::)) because I have done enough for me, I know lots of people who also need my penances.

    Penances are incalculable.

I've always wished there was a way to check your balance like a bank account. LOL :)

Older prayer cards had a number of days or years on them.

Then I could know if my penances are going for myself or if I've done enough that I can now apply them to others.

  • Well said Nadir.  I'm wondering if the poster might be somehow confusing indulgences with penance.
But you would never know if you've done enough.

As Miseremini guessed, you are referring to indulgenced activities, rather than penances.
keep going anyway. Never give up. God will do the tallying.

Great advice. An even easier "hands-off" way to do this, rather than worry about quantities, is to say a simple prayer in the morning and evening offering up your daily acts and sufferings as penance. I believe this is essentially what St. Therese's "Little Way" is.
"Be not therefore solicitous for tomorrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof." [Matt. 6:34]

"In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin." [Ecclus. 7:40]

  • You need to know about the Raccolta. There's an entry on wikipedia, including links to editions. You can maximize the profitableness of your prayers for yourself or for poor souls in purgatory.

  • Remember.... you can only obtain one plenary indulgence per day FOR YOURSELF except on the day you die.  HOWEVER, you can gain multiple plenary indulgences every day for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. (the stations of the Cross have many plenary indulgences attached to them)
Store up your treasures in Heaven......make friends with the Poor Souls .....offer your devotions, prayers and penances to relieve them of their sufferings and they will pray for you.  And when they reach Heaven, you will have a friend there to intercede for you.
The way the world is going now, we may not have anyone left here to pray and do penance for us.

So, in order to do this at home I need dispensation and a crucifix blessed for this purpose?

  • Man, I really need to start doing this often.
Start slow.  Try every Friday, and if you're at home, at 3 PM.  By the time Lent arrives in a few weeks you'll be so attached to the Stations you'll pray them every day.

  • So, in order to do this at home I need dispensation and a crucifix blessed for this purpose?
According to Pope Pius XII on April 24, 1951 "a person need only obtain the permission of any priest with the confessional faculties to make the devotion"  There is no formula for blessing the crucifix but he must form the intention to impart the indulgences for the stations.  Father Scott blessed many old crucifixes for me for this purpose so maybe have several blessed in case you want to give one or two away.
I think you need the permission so the priest knows you're not just too lazy to go to a church even if you could find one that is open.
