Help with CDs of Catholic ChantsHymns Project?

  • I've been praying tonight, slept a few hours, it's Christmas (EARLY, before kids are awake).

My husband, Daddy, and uncles/aunts generally don't "do" technology — at best, we're talking CD players. My children and I use iPods/phones. My family (my kids/husband) grew up in part in an Anglican Indult, and we've grown fond of both Catholic and Anglican chants and hymns. To be honest, I sometimes can't pick the difference — there's a lot of overlap, especially with the Indult. Generally, if it's something I heard as a kid and there's chant, organ, beauty and reverence, I download it.

With Spotify, I've been able to find many "Church albums"!   But most of the albums I've bought thanks to a few great hymns, which start out well, throw in some John Lennon or other guitar pieces, or worse, and I cull (or throw them out if I've bought the CD to rip to MP3 — it's a waste, I'm sorry; I'm like that.) So I'm making my own.

Primarily, I want a playlist or even hymnal of music that is HOLY, that one could hear in Church! No guitars, no "hurry ups" and other modern "revisions" on ancient classics. It literally gives me hives, and I've seen looks of pain on Daddy's face when something like that pops up. I can't give that as a gift. (No offense to those who like the "new takes"; remember, this is for OLDER PEOPLE and for posterity's sake — something my kids could show and play for future generations!) (And I'm not looking to make money at all; if anything, I'm spending!!)

I'd like to make this as a gift by Easter (if music only), or Christmas 2014 (if bound), so it's my new 2014 project. But I can't remember the hymnals, if I ever knew the proper names at all. (I remember stuff like, "red book", etc).

My sister absconded with one hymnal when my mother passed, and my dad has a copy locally that he uses/sings from all the time. And there's a green one an aunt has. My priest guards his like it's the Ark of the Covenant. So I've tried to take quickie pictures of the indices, but each book has different numbering — I've learned (the hard way) to go by first lines, and then by season. (Btw, Trinity is silly big!!!)

DOES THAT SOUND RIGHT?! (I've never "made" a hymnal.) Is this even a proper "work" to be attempting, or am I reinventing the wheel here? (If so, please point me to under $1000-not-first-edition with these Church hymns.)

    Guides I've Tried:

Adoremus (is this called something else now? Nobody seems familiar with it?!)

Oremus (I think this is Anglican, though I've seen a Catholic parish that uses them. They're still stamped with "Episcopal"-parish name, though, except some are Catholic. Parishes take what they can get).

    Example Album I've Tried:

And (but with modern stuff — I stripped a few songs and threw out the CDs  :smash-pc: but much of it was nice).

    Examples I have so far:

The below are 2 samples of what I've got (linked to Spotify for those who have it, then the Amazon album which lets you sample it 30 seconds):

    • [url=http://open.spotify.com/track/4UyeaMPQ6fkGRpuVjKuQwC]Immortal, Invisible
by The Festival Choir and Hosanna Chorus (LOVE THE ORGAN HERE!) and the (warning, it's the one linked above; some songs sound good, but then WHAM — synthesizer or guitar, so be warned!!!)

    • [url=http://open.spotify.com/track/50GYoCbkD1UwQRftolLa1v]Hail Holy Queen
(both Indult and Catholic). (I already own this. Please don't criticize it as it's one of my favorite versions EVER!!!)

I'm so frustrated. I'm not a music publisher. Or a book publisher. So far, I've got five or six, of hundreds!!! I'd thought there would be an easier way, like something I could buy; or a few definite "go to" choirs I could count on (Sistine Chapel singers, Vienna Boys, ...something). I am at a loss.

My dad would love this, as would many others in my family. Again, this is NOT for me, but for others, who look sad they can't find music. If I went whole hog (who knows!), I could publish and gift to nursing homes!!! To parishes!!!

Mainly, I'm hoping there's a choir or existing project that I'm just too blonde and stupid to know about, that's not particularly "Anglican" or, "modern Catholic, so I'm not reinventing the wheel.

But if not, I will continue this as a very important project for those I love.

I can get a lot from Amazon for $0.80 or lower even.  :farmer: I'd like to print out the sheet music/lyrics too (easy with the online links above; most are public domain now, thank you Johann Sebastian!!). But I'm doing all of this on my own... my husband gave me the okay, and my kids will help, but mainly my husband thinks I MUST be reinventing the wheel. So I need some mega guidance. Including things you think I might leave out as I'm not a priest or even a very good person. I just know what I like, and my kids like, and some parishioners like. So I'm open (except for my "Hail Holy Queen" song — I LOVE IT!)

Maybe I can make a "lite" version for my dad, and an organist's copy for my son or others. Maybe by next Christmas, if it passes muster, I can get it looked at by someone "official" (SSPX would do; CMRI would do... INDULT would do, except I guess Frank would have a say in that :/ ), but if I get it officially "okayed", maybe I could get it professionally bound! (Again, my own expense; just a few copies, then release it to public domain???)

What do you think? Thank you and Merry Christmas CI!
