  • Happy Michaelmas Day!

From The Saint Andrew Daily Missal with Vespers for Sundays and Feasts by Dom Gaspar Lefebvre, O.S.B., of the Abbey of St- André (Bruges, Belgium: Liturgical Apostolate of the Abbey of St-André, 1956), here is the Mass, together with Proper Vespers, for Feast Day of the Dedication of St. Michael the Archangel.

  • Here is a very beautiful devotion from The St. Gertrude Manual (New York: Frederick Pustet & Co., 1915):

  • From the rare tome The True Prayers of St. Gertrude and St. Mechtilde (trans. Canon John Gray; London: Sheed & Ward, 1936), here is a devotion in honor of the nine Angelic Choirs composed by St. Gertrude the Great. I have also added other prayers that I thought would be useful and edifying for us on this sacred day.

Note the profound theological contemplation that animated the prayer of St. Gertrude, the great Medieval mystic who who was venerated and admired as celestial Patroness by the great St. Teresa of Jesus, who in turn become the Mistress of prayer and of the ways of the interior life for the children of Holy Mother Church.

  • In honor of the heavenly Prince St. Michael, here are some Meditations for his Feast Day composed by the great St. Alphonsus de Liguori, found in an appendix of a very rare edition of The Glories of Mary (Vol. II, trans. Rev. Fr. Eugene Grimm; New York: Benziger Brothers, 1887).

May these beautiful writings help you cultivate a greater esteem and love for this great Archangel!

  • St. Bernard, Doctor mellifluus, amicus Sponsi, Virginis Matris præco mirificus, "the Mellifluous Doctor, the friend of the Spouse, the marvelous herald of the Virgin Mother," as the Breviarium Monasticuм acclaims him (20 August, ant. ad Benedictus), has inspired countless generations throughout the centuries with his sermons anointed with holy unction and founded upon solid doctrine.

Here is a first Sermon he preached at the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, taken from St. Bernard's Sermons for the Seasons & Principal Festivals of the Year: Translated from the Original Latin by a Priest of Mount Melleray, (Vol. III.; Westminster, MD: The Carroll Press, 1950).

  • Whereas the Roman Church has two distinct Feasts for St. Michael (the 8th of May and the 29th of September) and distinct Feasts for the Archangels Sts. Gabriel and Raphael (the 24th of March and the 24th of October respectively) as well a special Feast for the Angel-Guardians (the 2nd of October), the Byzantines have a Plenary Commemoration of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and All the Heavenly Powers on the 8th of November.

From the Byzantine Missal for Sundays and Feast Days with Rites of Sacraments, and Various Offices and Prayers, published at Birmingham, Alabama, by St. George's R. C. Byzantine Church in 1958 (having been printed at Tournai, Belgium, by Société Saint Jean l' Evangéliste, Desclée & Cie), here are the propers for the Divine Liturgy of this great Feast, which is the Easten equivalent of our Michaelmas Day.
