A great while ago I found this little piece of thin paper in one of the Breviaries I had just received, and I wish to share it with everyone here at CathInfo:

I found more information about this in the book Carmelite Devotions and Prayers for Special Feasts of the Liturgical Year, compiled by a Carmelite Tertiary (Milwaukee, WI: The Bruce Publishing Company, 1956).

Historical note: This was not the first time the faithful had a special devotion to a passage of the Holy Gospel. The greatest example of this is the great veneration our Medieval forefathers had for the great Prologue of the Holy Gospel according to St. John. A paper with the words written upon it was sometimes carried or worn as a sort of scapular. It was often recited at night as a defense against the devils. This great veneration was immortalized when Pope St. Pius V placed this Gospel lesson in the Ordinary of the Mass as the Last Gospel when he reformed the Missale Romanum.

The holy Carmelite Sr. Marie de Saint-Pierre is better known for the propagation of the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, which is intimately related to the above-mentioned devotion.
