  • I've come across a couple of N.O. Catholics who claim that God revealed to them who their soulmate would be and who they would marry. For instance, a young woman I know did not want to get married but wanted to dedicate her life to God. When she was praying to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, she heard an interior voice within her telling her that she should get married and that the guy who would be her soulmate would be called Matthew and would play the drums in LifeTeen. A couple of months later, she did end up meeting a guy called Matthew who played drums in LifeTeen.
Another guy I know, who is also dedicated to the Holy Eucharist, desire so much to meet a good woman to marry. He told me that, when visiting Jesus, he Jesus interiorly telling him that He would send a woman to him in His own time and not to worry. This guy is waiting for God to reveal to him whom this woman is.

Why is it that quite a few N.O. Catholics who are devoted to the Holy Eucharist and spend many hours praying before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament believe that God will reveal to them who to marry - and sometimes, like the woman mentioned above, seem to have this authenticated by a prophecy come true?

  • Magdalene,

    Greetings in Christ.

While this is certainly possible (with God all things are possible), we must be reminded of the warnings of the Saints and Fathers to never trust in dreams, visions, and revelations, but always to first regard them as coming from our adversary.  A complete confession with one's spiritual father is a must in such circuмstances to discern whom these revelations have come from, for the angels of darkness can also appear as messengers of light.

    Peace be with you.

    Christopher

The church is always skeptical when people make such claims and I believe we should be to.  For one I cannot imagine Jesus using the term ''soulmate'', it all sounds rather fantastical to me.

It is more than possible for a person to delude themselves when meditating, what I mean by this is that we really answer ourselves and mistake it for Jesus, one of the saints etc.  Also when you say quite many what other examples do you have where the prophesy has actually came true?

I would be more inclined to believe it if these voices where not promising the very things they wanted to hear.

  • Voices in our heads are often our own thoughts, especially when it has to do with something very emotionally charged.  Sometimes intense prayer can lead to a sort of dreamlike state where we can easily mistake thoughts for reality.

I've seen this happen to myself when I was practicing Buddhist meditation, so I know that it is not necessarily a message from God.  At one time, when people were generally less distracted by things like TV and the constant bombardment of city life, they were more aware of when their thoughts became more charged like this.  I think it's more difficult for a modern person to discern between their thoughts and "other" so to speak.

And of course, there is the possibility of demonic involvement.  But more likely it is the individual person's daydream.

  • Do not the Scriptures speak of demons in disguise?
