There are a lot of Catholics and Orthodox Christians who consider today their Christmas Day.

I've known Armenians who do this culturally.  It seems to have something to do with one of the 3 Kings having come from Armenia, but I'm not sure.  Certainly, Armenia is to the east of the Holy Land.

Armenia has the distinction of being the first country to officially become a Catholic nation.  Armenia was Catholic before France, before Italy, and before England or Ireland.

Armenians in the main are very proud of this heritage from about 1,700 years ago.

The very conservative of the Old Order Amish also celebrate Epiphany as most of do on Dec. 25.  They call it Old Christmas, and it is because of the Three Kings visiting the Christ Child and bringing gifts.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • St. Lucius an early British king, converted sometime in the later 2nd century and wrote to Rome to the pope to send priests to instruct the people. Thus one could argue Britain is the oldest Catholic country.

The consensus of scholarly opinion since the late 1800s is that St. Lucius did not exist. That opinion has come under some attack in recent years and will likely end up on the ash heap of history along with a lot of other trendy Victorian ideas.

  • I was surprised to learn that the Amish think so highly of Epiphany.  I did business with an Amish bishop several years ago who told me this.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

What about you, Sigismund -- don't you have something special for Epiphany in your eastern divine liturgy?  Did your family exchange gifts?  Is it a special day for you?
