  • My favorite is Psalm 83.  I like it because it expresses my longing to be in Our Lord's presence.  That it is traditionally prayed right before Mass is no coincidence.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • Oh, I have a lot of favorite ones!

Obviously my signature line is one of my favorite ones.  (ps 135)

I really like psalm 90, which is prayed (appropriately) at compline every night.

He that dwelleth in the aid of the most High, shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob. [2] He shall say to the Lord: Thou art my protector, and my refuge: my God, in him will I trust. [3] For he hath delivered me from the snare of the hunters: and from the sharp word. [4] He will overshadow thee with his shoulders: and under his wings thou shalt trust. [5] His truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night.

[6] Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil. [7] A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee. [8] But thou shalt consider with thy eyes: and shalt see the reward of the wicked. [9] Because thou, O Lord, art my hope: thou hast made the most High thy refuge. [10] There shall no evil come to thee: nor shall the scourge come near thy dwelling.

[11] For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways. [12] In their hands they shall bear thee up: lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. [13] Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk: and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon. [14] Because he hoped in me I will deliver him: I will protect him because he hath known my name. [15] He shall cry to me, and I will hear him: I am with him in tribulation, I will deliver him, and I will glorify him.

[16] I will fill him with length of days; and I will shew him my salvation.

I also like psalm 103.  Good for giving to tea-totallers.

In truth, there are very few psalms that I don't like.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • I don't think I can come up with my favorite.  Perhaps I can come up with my top five. Perhaps.  I'll think about it.
But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.

If I had to scale it down to five, it might be:  Psalms 4, 18, 44, 53 & 147.   But there are so many that I love.

  • How about the shortest Psalm?

    Psalm 116:

  • Psalm 73 is very powerful, and quite applicable to our times.

[1] Understanding for Asaph. O God, why hast thou cast us off unto the end: why is thy wrath enkindled against the sheep of thy pasture? [2] Remember thy congregation, which thou hast possessed from the beginning. The sceptre of thy inheritance which thou hast redeemed: mount Sion in which thou hast dwelt. [3] Lift up thy hands against their pride unto the end; see what things the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary. [4] And they that hate thee have made their boasts, in the midst of thy solemnity. They have set up their ensigns for signs, [5] And they knew not both in the going out and on the highest top. As with axes in a wood of trees,

[6] They have cut down at once the gates thereof, with axe and hatchet they have brought it down. [7] They have set fire to thy sanctuary: they have defiled the dwelling place of thy name on the earth. [8] They said in their heart, the whole kindred of them together: Let us abolish all the festival days of God from the land. [9] Our signs we have not seen, there is now no prophet: and he will know us no more. [10] How long, O God, shall the enemy reproach: is the adversary to provoke thy name for ever?

[11] Why dost thou turn away thy hand: and thy right hand out of the midst of thy bosom for ever? [12] But God is our king before ages: he hath wrought salvation in the midst of the earth. [13] Thou by thy strength didst make the sea firm: thou didst crush the heads of the dragons in the waters. [14] Thou hast broken the heads of the dragon: thou hast given him to be meat for the people of the Ethiopians. [15] Thou hast broken up the fountains and the torrents: thou hast dried up the Ethan rivers.

[16] Thine is the day, and thine is the night: thou hast made the morning light and the sun. [17] Thou hast made all the borders of the earth: the summer and the spring were formed by thee. [18] Remember this, the enemy hath reproached the Lord: and a foolish people hath provoked thy name. [19] Deliver not up to beasts the souls that confess to thee: and forget not to the end the souls of thy poor. [20] Have regard to thy covenant: for they that are the obscure of the earth have been filled with dwellings of iniquity.

[21] Let not the humble be turned away with confusion: the poor and needy shall praise thy name. [22] Arise, O God, judge thy own cause: remember thy reproaches with which the foolish man hath reproached thee all the day. [23] Forget not the voices of thy enemies: the pride of them that hate thee ascendeth continually.
• Regarding Psalm 73, yes, I've often thought the same.  And with regards to Psalm 50--well, who of us could do without it?   There seems to be a psalm for every occasion we might find ourselves.

Of course, there is always psalm 21.   I like the above because they are either prayed on Sundays or on important feast days; therefore, they have become very dear to my heart.

  • The Psalms seem to have encouragement for every season of life. It is why I cherish them so much. This is why I cannot tell you an all all-time favorite, but rather the favorite right now. I've been meditating on Psalm 19, particulary verses 6-9.

"We will rejoice in thy salvation; and in the name of our God we shall be exalted. The Lord fulfill all thy petitions: now have I known that the Lord hath saved his anointed. He will hear him from his holy heaven: the salvation of his right hand is in powers. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will call upon the name of the Lord our God. They are bound, and have fallen; but we are risen, and are set upright. O Lord, save the king: and hear us in the day that we shall call upon thee. "

It reminds me that God hears his anointed, those that love him. I have been shamelessly petitioning Him this past year for many things, persistantly knocking at his door. He's fulfilled a lot of those petitions so generously. He's such a good Father! The petitions that he has not granted, I won't lose hope, knowing that he has heard and granted my last ones according to his Will.
Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.
    ~James 1:27

  • My favorite Psalm is Psalm 21. But I do not know many psalms. It is one part of the Bible I have never read straight through, I have only read some of the Psalms individually.

  • One doesn't read through the Psalms like a narrative story.  They are poetry set to music.
There's a Psalm for every state of the soul.  Christ Himself prepared psalms for His own use.  Read Psalm 21 and see if He hadn't prepared it for His Passion.
The emoticons show how I like to read and apply the Psalms.

I was just meditating upon Psalm 70 because of a pathetic email I received from some persons who were told to break their connections to me--reason?  I went to Bp. W.'s 25th Anniversary in VA.  One of the persons could lose his job with the SSPX through continued "association."  This individual refuses to say from whom the directive comes, leaving me to guess or go on a wild goose hunt and risk being lied to.
He says, "We can be pals "secretly."  No thank-you.  I prefer public estrangement to secret friendship.  I have done nothing for which I need to go sneaking around.
Let this "authority" come to me himself.  (Or herself.)
    God will vindicate me.
Until He does, I'll do without these "friends."

If you pray the Breviary, that will help immensely.
