    Excerpts from Dom Gueranger's The Liturgical Year, Volume 4, pp. 106 ff.

    On this day, the eve of Septuagesima, the Church uses a powerful means for infusing her own spirit into the minds of her children. She takes the song of heaven away from us: she forbids our further uttering that Alleluia which is so dear to us.

    It is not a mere word, nor a profane, unmeaning melody; it is the song that recalls the land we are banished from, it is the sweet sigh of the soul longing to be at home.

    • I never realized Septuagesima could overlap with Christmastide which officially ends Feb 2 with the Presentation. 
    Is this an unusual occurance?

    It does happen though infrequently.  It happened back in 2015 and in addition to this year will happen again in 2037 and 2042.
    Below is a table of moveable feast days.  It was printed by Angelus press on a trifold pamphlet that people could keep in their missals of the prayers for after low Mass in latin and english.

    It happens. And when it does, one should take down 100% of Christmas decorations, music, etc. at least if one desires to be synchronized with the mind of the Church. Tomorrow, the Church dons Violet vestments, the color of penance. The readings, Gospel, etc. all focus our attention on the other main truth of our religion: the Redemption. We're about to focus on prayer, penance, and almsgiving.
