  • I know in Roman Catholic thought it is said that the sacraments give sanctifying grace, but what about prayer? Like the Rosary. Do prayer and other actions that aren't the seven sacraments  (like doing charitable deeds) give sanctifying grace or another 'type' of grace?

    Gracias

  • The Rosary is a sacramental,  Holy Water is also a sacramental.  Sacraments have the Precious Blood.  Instituted by Christ and therefore give Sanctifying Grace.
I know, one day, we will not have the Precious Blood. Do whatever you can to obtain the True Sacraments of a True Valid priest.

  • There is Actual Grace. To help us resist temptation. The Rosary is very powerful, but not as powerful as the sacraments. Actual Grace is a supernatural help of God.
Sinners need actual Grace to rise from sin.  For an example: You may have come across stories(true) those not in Sanctifying Grace, told to say "Hail Marys" and have visions of Mary to receive the Sacrament of Baptism.  Actual Grace is made to act through sermons, reading good books(bible).  You could ask for Actual Grace when giving advice , good example.

Yes, all those prayers and good deeds give sanctifying grace, as long as they are done for the love of God. Talking about types of grace, you might find this link helpful. You will find further links on the different types of grace at the bottom.

    Term
    SANCTIFYING GRACE
    Definition
The supernatural state of being infused by God, which permanently inheres in the soul. It is a vital principle of the supernatural life, as the rational soul is the vital principle of a human being's natural life. It is not a substance but a real quality that becomes part of the soul substance. Although commonly associated with the possession of the virtue of charity, sanctifying grace is yet distinct from this virtue. Charity, rather, belongs to the will, whereas sanctifying grace belongs to the whole soul, mind, will, and affections. It is called sanctifying grace because it makes holy those who possess the gift by giving them a participation in the divine life. It is zo_ (life), which Christ taught that he has in common with the Father and which those who are in the state of grace share.

  • Prayer by itself does not give you sanctifying grace, however prayer can help to dispose you to make the act of perfect contrition.

  • Here is an excerpt from an imprimatured Catholic book of 1918, entitled, "To the Heart of the Child":

    Quote
The more I increase sanctifying grace, the higher degree of it I have; and the higher my degree, the greater my reward in Heaven.

But how can I increase sanctifying grace? Once in a state of sanctifying grace, everything good that I do increases it—every prayer I say, every loving thought I have of God, every kind word I speak, every temptation I overcome. And venial sins, though they disfigure my soul, cannot lessen sanctifying grace, but one mortal sin utterly destroys it. Unless I am in sanctifying grace I cannot win or merit a reward in Heaven for a single thing I do.

What an awful thing it is to live in mortal sin, for not only am I then in constant danger of losing my soul but everything I do is worthless for Heaven.
"there can be no holiness where there is disagreement with the pope" - Pope St. Pius X

Today, only Catholics holding the sedevacantist position are free from the anguish entailed by this truth.
