Title: Divine Office
Post by: Arborman on August 01, 2010, 08:13:42 AM
I have not seen this topic discussed here, but I was wondering if anyone prays the Divine Office?  When I am praying it I feel great spiritual benefits.  I would appreciate any opinions on any of the following books I use.

The Monastic Diurnal by Oxford University Press  This is an Anglican version of the traditional office.

The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin  Copyright 1904 Benziger St Bonaventure Publications.

Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Catholic Book publishing company

Christian Prayer  Catholic Book publishing company.

I started using the liturgy of the hours book "Christian Prayer" before I started attending the TLM.  I used it quite a while then grew tired of it's modernists prayers and intentions.  I put it away on the shelf and got the Monastic Diurnal, which I like but grew tired of all the page flipping and the old English. I really like the Little office 1904 version, but it is a single day and is limited for every day use.

I am again using the "Christian Prayer" book.  It is easy to use.  If I approach my prayer time with the proper frame of mind the book works well.  But now I am toying with getting this:
http://www.amazon.com/Benedictine-Daily-Prayer-Short-Breviary/dp/0814628338
This book is based on the Benedictine Office but has modernized English and better hymns the the 1970's LOTH.  This book has the inclusive language, which didn't bother me when I was reading the pages online.

I would appreciate hearing what others do and welcome a reasonable discussion of the pro or cons of any of these books.

I don't have the Divine Office yet but I'd certainly pray it when I've one already.

I guess of all the prayerbook you've listed, this is the only one I dislike.

I have used the first text of the Little Office you list, as well as another.

As far as praying (some of) the public prayers of Holy Church, it is unquestionably salutary.

A man I know runs this site: http://www.breviary.net

You will likely find that it is an invaluable resource.

I forgot I had "shorter christian prayer" also.  That is what I used today.

Upon further review the Benedictine daily office is not for me.

I used the four volume edition with the same texts at "Christian Prayer".
