As I'm sure many (if not all) here are aware, there are several different variations of the Prayer to St Michael, slightly different in wording.
I once heard Father Terry Marks (requiescat in pace) explain this --- he said that at the time of this prayer, copyright laws were in flux, and for some reason I don't recall, there was no one standard translation, rather, several translations emerged, each just a little different.
I don't doubt his explanation, but I have had to wonder --- and this isn't something we can know one way or the other --- whether the evil one so detested this prayer, that he introduced an element of confusion, and influenced different translators to render it slightly differently, so that it would be difficult to say in unison.
Sometimes I just cut to the chase, and recite it in Latin, even if the congregation is using the vernacular.
Thoughts?
