From time to time I mentioned the turf cutters on this forum. Yesterday I learned of the death of Dermot Moran. I hadn't seen Dermot in about two years. Last time I met with him was outside a court house. Many of us organised large crowds to attend the court hearings and we marched through towns and cities.
Not a case involving the 'four' but a case arising from the siege of Clonmoylan.
He often thanked me for the role I played in helping the turf cutters and was grateful to owners of Cath Info for highlighting the issues. He appreciated the support. Dermot was a devout Catholic. He also campaigned against abortion. Stood against the EU. A man of principle to the end. A man for rural Ireland, common sense and Irish ways. Pray for the repose of his soul.
Many Trad Catholics and pro life folk here in Ireland were on the marches and demonstrations. I have attached a notice from the turf cutting group. His death is a big loss.
https://www.facebook.com/BarroughterAndClonmoylanBogsActionGroup/We are shocked and saddened by the untimely death of our spokesperson, colleague and dear friend Dermot Moran. Dermot fought tiredlessly for the Turf Cutters of Barroughter and Clonmoylan Bogs and the rights of the Turf Cutters to cut their turf, as well as the rights of all Turf Cutters in Ireland.
Dermot protected the Turf Cutters and their property during the seige of Clonmoylan in 2012. He was a man that never wavered from his principles. Dermot will be sadly missed by the turf cutting communities throughout Ireland and by his own local community.
A great man has been called home from us. Rest in peace Dermot.
