A regular at the Traditional Latin Mass that was held in the home of the late Deirdre Manifold. After Mass it was usual to drink tea, sing songs/hymns and recite poetry. Brother Brian would recite and sing well. Pray for the repose of his soul. An end of an era as he was one of the few Christian brothers left. Some in his order betrayed the ideas of the founder and caused great hurt and harm in Ireland.

Reposing at St. Anthony's Room within the Church of St. John the Apostle, Knocknacarra, Galway on Sunday 16th April from 6.30 p.m. with Removal to the Church at 8.00 p.m. Funeral after 12 noon Requiem Mass on Monday 17th April to St. Patrick's Church Cemetery, Elphin, Co Roscommon to arrive at 4.00 p.m. approximately. I attended the funeral though not the burial. A good turn out from the Christian Brothers. Most were in their late sixties and in their seventies. They were all fresh and quite able bodied. The suit and tie seems to be their attire these days. There are a handful of Christian brothers teaching in Irish schools. They haven't had a recruit in years. Such a decline.In the 1960s there were over 1,000 Christian brothers in the schools here. We shall have to tradify them.

Brother Brian loved and lived out the faith. He loved Ireland. He was buried in his native Elphin in Roscommon. Even the garden will miss him because he tended to the flowers and loved nature. He taught in several schools and was involved in adult literacy.
He turned up when expected or unexpected and always seemed to know what was the right thing to say. He never needed to be prompted and would break into song. He loved the songs of Ireland and recited poetry from heart. Despite being in his 80s he visited the elderly regularly. He loved walking through the fields and woods of Ireland. He was raised on a farm and loved ruralism.
After the Traditional Mass in Mrs Manifold's we would be hours singing songs and reciting poems whilst discussing topics such as the Jєωs, Fatima, crisis in the church etc etc. You met all sorts at Mrs. Manifold's but everyone had the great love for the faith and the nation.
Brother Brian would always quote the poet Patrick Kavanagh.

For the benefit of those not from Ireland it should be known the Irish are mad in the sense of putting things right in society. The English think we are mad as in raving mad.
You might describe Brother Brian as eccentric but he is a big loss. As he was a former president of his local Percy French society I shall include this.
