  • Advisory Notice: Although this post could be interpreted as a discussion of sedevacantism, this was not the intent whereby this post has been created. The Collect in question has been posted either for the private use of those individuals to whom such prayer is useful for whatever reason [devotional, academic, &c.], as well as for those who enjoy such liturgical curiosities, which are almost unknown gems in the great liturgical treasury that Holy Mother Church has given us as our birthright. Therefore I think it appropriate to post it in this sub-forum, rather in the Crisis in the Church sub-forum, as it is not the author's intention to provoke anyone or engage in any polemical exchange regarding this Collect. I kindly ask out of courtesy that posters be pleased to discuss the controversial issues concomitant with individuals views and opinions that are pertinent to the matter in question the Crisis in the Church sub-forum. Thank you for your courtesy and cooperation.

    Hello everyone:

The Carmelite Rite, that is the Rite of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem, a Medieval usage preserved by the Calced Carmelites, has a curious rubric for the Admonitions and Prayers that follow the chanting of the Passion on Good Friday. If the Holy See is vacant, the usual admonition and prayer for the Roman Pontiff are omitted and the following admonition and prayer are chanted. This is the only Rite that has such a provision in the rites of Good Friday [that is, of which I personally know].

The following text is from The Missal According to the Carmelite Rite in Latin and English for Every Day in the Year, published at Rome by the Vatican Polyglot Press in 1953, having an Imprimi potest given by Rev. Fr. Kilian E. Lynch, Prior General of the Carmelite Order, at Rome, 12 June 1953.

  • In Spain, the Holy See allowed clerics to pray for Franco in place of the Holy Roman Emperor in the Admonitions and Prayers that follow the chanting of the Passion in Good Friday.

The following text is taken from Nueva Semana Santa completísima para uso de los fieles (Texto latin-castellano) compiled by Rev. Fr. Baltasar del Castillo, published at Barcelona, Spain, by Editorial Vilamala in 1957, with an Imprimatur by His Excellency Gregory, Archbishop of Barcelona (no date given).

  • Ah, I forgot that not everyone can read Latin or Spanish.

Here is a rough translation of the text contained in the preceding post:

    Quote
Let us pray for our Catholic Chieftain Francisco: that our Lord God may subject unto him all the barbaric nations, unto our perpetual peace.

       Oremus. --- V. Flectamus genua. R. Levate.

Almighty and everlasting God, in Whose hands are the all the powers and all the laws of kingdoms: do Thou graciously look upon the Spanish kingdom; that the heathen who trust in their own ferocity may be overcome by the power of Thy right hand. Through our Lord... R. Amen.

Which one, the one said during the vacancy of the Holy See in the Carmelite Missal, or the one for Francisco Franco in the Roman Missals in Spain?

The reply to the both is in the negative, because Francisco Franco is not in Spain anymore, and whatever traditional Calced Carmelites that remain may not be sedevacantist.

Are there traditional Calced Carmelites [those Carmelites from which St. Teresa and St. John broke to establish the Discalced Carmelites] that are affiliated with the Priestly Fraternity of Pope St. Pius X?

If so, they would not have said that Collect. They would have prayed for Benedict XVI.
