Was it? I'm just looking for a quick answer, not pages of long posts I could look up if I had the time. I had just read that Plus XII revived this old practice that was supposedly common for hundreds of years. Just curious if that's true, even if there was good reason to stop the practice for hundreds more years.

I don't know. You might read the article on Good Friday in the Liturgical Year. Gueranger mentions things like this sometimes.

I think the "restoration" of Holy Week mostly comes down to moving the Easter Vigil back to the evening instead of the morning. Communion on Good Friday doesn't seem like a restoration as the Byzantine Rite doesn't do it and it seems to stand on contrast to the absolute desolation of the crucifixion on Good Friday.
