Is this a Catholic teaching: You should practice charity towards yourself. Only then can you practice charity towards others.
I ask because I have anger issues, and I keep a script that I pull out whenever I feel the anger taking over.
This is it:
Hatred/Boredom Reminder
1. When I'm thinking clearly I'm not bored or full of hatred. An exception may be righteous hatred, but it is difficult sometimes to tell the difference between righteous hatred and sinful hatred. If you're in doubt where the hatred comes from then don't give it the benefit of the doubt. Get up and do some chores or some physical activity to take your mind off it. It says that you should practice charity towards yourself before you are capable of practicing charity towards others. Have some charity towards yourself and get your mind off things that at the moment you are not prepared to handle well.
I suppose it could be seen as a selfish thing.
