  • Apparently there is some welfare entitlement that I can get if I switch my payment. I am a student and get welfare. People tell me I should be getting it because they are in my situation and id get more than I get now.
I need the money because I got none to spare.
If you think this is a reasonable desire, then please say 1 hail mary that I will be able to get this and that people wont put obstacles in my way.

    thank you

  • People pay taxes so that in certain circuмstances others who are in certain difficulties can benefit. I think you should accept the benefits and make good use of your time to benefit from the education that is available to you. Then later on when you become better established you will be able to contribute to helping someone else in similar situation as yourself.

  •  :scratchchin:Think it over carefully before you sign on.  Welfare comes with strings attached.  Be sure you are willing to be tied to them.  Find out how to disentangle yourself later on.  Sometimes it is nearly impossible.  I am eligible for food supplements in the US.  But if I accept, the government can dictate things like what car I'm allowed to drive--or even if I can own a car.  They can mandate I get certain vaccines.  I value my privacy and right to determination more than any free food I receive.  Thanks, but no thanks!  There are plenty of no-questions-asked food pantries in New York, should I really be in need.  The assistance I could use, I'm not eligible!
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

    Are you absolutely serious?!

My sister went on govt-funded assistance of some sort (a huge number of kids); they told her (TOLD her) if only one of her many kids were "learning disabled", she'd get more. I thought the suggestion alone was hideous. Ofc she refused that, but even the little extra they got that year was a blessing. And within a year they were making plenty of money (and the state sure got it back in spades — taxes!).

I think sometimes we're put in situations to be humbled, and when we're adequately humbled, things turn around (in our characters mostly). So T-Cat I'd take any assistance you need, a leg up, for a short amount of time anyway. And pay it forward later when someone else needs a hand.

  • It's different in the UK & Ireland. Not the same mentality as here in the US. Even in Letters to Confused Catholics Archbishop Lefebrve writes about stopping subsidies to families as being hostile to the Catholic religion.

Frances I agree with you but that sadly many our age have lost sight of that. On this board we have regular posters saying to use welfare as a way to grow Catholic families and take what the government will give help for while using cash for homeschool materials.
It's a big reason I've always been against the school "vouchers" that the GOP loves to argue for.

  • Cecelia, there ARE situations where it is acceptable to accept government help.  My point was that, for me, it is unnecessary, by God's grace.  If CHILDREN are going hungry, by all means, accept graciously.  That is why I pay my taxes.  For once, poche makes sense.  Be prudent.  That's all!  It's not about pride.  In my "starving college student" years, I used to go dumpster-diving.  Now, I don't need to.
