Title: Catholic Students Aids to Holy Mass

Throughout the course of the coming weeks and months I shall provide the readers of CathInfo with commentaries upon the Roman Missal found in the four-volume set of The Sacramentary (Liber Sacramentorum): Historical and Liturgical Notes on the Roman Missal authored by His Eminence Cardinal Schuster, of happy memory, published at at New York, Cincinnati and Chicago by Benziger Brothers.

However, before we begin studying these series of commentaries, I think it best to peruse carefully a very important chapter of the useful and devout tome Catholic Liturgy: Its Fundamental Principles authored by the Very Rev. Gaspar Lefebvre, O.S.B. (of the Saint Andrew Daily Missal and Vesperal fame), published at London by Sands & Co. in 1924, with a new and revised edition published in 1954.

I hope the learning and devout unction of Dom Lefebvre allows us to penetrate deeper into the hallowed and sublime Mysteries of the sacred Altar.

On this Sunday and until Christmas Eve, the Roman Breviary at the Invitatory at Matins breaks forth with devout impatience at beholding the imminent arrival of the Savior as a little Child brought forth from the chaste womb of Blessed Mary ever-Virgin at Bethlehem - and His Second Coming in the throne of His majestic glory as the dreadful Judge at Doomsday, when His elect, formed by the patronage and tutelage of His Most Holy Mother, shall arise from the sepulchers and enter unto the heavenly beatitude to which they were predestined from all eternity, - "Prope est jam Dominus: * Venite, adoremus"("The Lord is now nigh, * Come ye, let us adore").

NOTE: The Octave of the Epiphany has been abrogated by the General Decree De rubricis ad simpliciorem formam redigendis (Tit. II., num. 11) promulgated by the Congregation of Sacred Rites by authority of His Holiness, Pope Pius XII (23 March 1955; A. A. S., vol. xlvii., pp. 218 sqq.). The Commemoration of the Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ, kept as a Duplex major, was instituted by the same General Decree (Tit. II., num. 16) on what was formerly the Octave Day of Epiphany, restoring a grand harmony with the Theophany celebrated by the Eastern Churches: the formulary for the Mass remained unchanged.
