  • Prayer to offer the Holy Face of Jesus to God the Father:
Almighty and Eternal Father, since it has pleased Our Divine Saviour to reveal to mankind in modern times the power residing in His Holy Face, we now avail ourselves of this treasure in our great need.
Since our Saviour Himself promised that by offering to Thee His Holy Face disfigured in the Passion we can procure the settlement of all the affairs of our household, and that nothing whatsoever will be refused to us, we now come before Thy throne.
Eternal Father, turn away Thy angry gaze from our guilty people whose face has become unsightly in Thine eyes. Look instead upon the Face of Thy Beloved Son; for this is the Face of Him in Whom Thou art well pleased. We now offer Thee His Holy Face covered with blood, sweat, dust, spittle and shame, in reparation for the worst crimes of our age, which are atheism, blasphemy and the desecration of Thine holy days.
We thus hope to appease Thy anger justly provoked against us. The All-Merciful Advocate opens His mouth to plead our cause; listen to His cries, behold His tears, O God, and through the merits of His Holy Face, hearken to Him when He intercedes for us poor miserable sinners.

LITANY OF THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS
I salute Thee, I adore Thee and I love Thee, O adorable Face of Jesus, my Beloved, noble Seal of the Divinity! Outraged anew by blasphemers. I offer Thee, through the heart of Thy blessed Mother, the worship of all the Angels and Saints, most humbly beseeching Thee to repair and renew in me and in all men Thy Image disfigured by sin.
O adorable Face which was adored, with profound respect, by Mary and Joseph when they saw Thee for the first time, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which did ravish with joy, in the stable of Bethlehem, the Angels, the shepherds and the magi, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which did transpierce with a dart of love in the Temple, the saintly old man Simeon and the prophetess Anna, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which filled with admiration the Doctors of the law when Thou didst appear in the Temple at the age of twelve years, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which possesses beauty always ancient and always new, have mercy…
O adorable Face which is the masterpiece of the Holy Ghost, in which the Eternal Father is well pleased, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which is the ineffable mirror of the divine perfection, have mercy on us.
Adorable Face of Jesus which was so mercifully bowed down on the Cross, on the day of Thy Passion, for the salvation of the world! Once more today in pity bend down towards us poor sinners. Cast upon us a glance of compassion and give us Thy peace.
O adorable Face which became brilliant like the sun and radiant with glory, on the Mountain of Tabor, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which wept and was troubled at the tomb of Lazarus, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which was rendered sad at the sight of Jerusalem, and shed tears on that ungrateful city, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which was bowed down to the ground in the Garden of Olives, and covered with confusion for our sins, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which was covered with the sweat of blood, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which was struck by a vile servant, covered with a veil of shame, and profaned by the sacrilegious hands of Thy enemies, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which by Its divine glance, wounded the heart of St. Peter with a dart of sorrow and love, have mercy on us.
Be merciful to us, O my God! Do not reject our prayers, when in the midst of our afflictions, we call upon Thy Holy Name and seek with love and confidence Thy adorable Face.
O adorable Face which was washed and anointed by Mary and the holy women and covered with a shroud, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which was all resplendent with glory and beauty on the day of the Resurrection, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which is hidden in the Eucharist, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which will appear at the end of time in the clouds with great power and great majesty, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which will make sinners tremble, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which will fill the just with joy for all eternity, have mercy on us.
O adorable Face which merits all our reverence, our homage and our adoration, have mercy on us.
O Lord, show us Thy Face, and we shall be saved!
O Lord, show us Thy Face, and we shall be saved!
O Lord, show us Thy Face, and we shall be saved!

  • Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus
“Of you my heart has said, ‘Seek his face!’ Your face, Yahweh, I seek” (Ps 27, 8)

Man has always searched to contemplate the face of God. Jesus told us that “to see Him is to see the Father” (Jn 14:9) and so, the contemplation of Christ’s face is the very contemplation of God. To see the Lord’s face is to somehow have an encounter or toget to know the Person of Christ. Therefore, it is not surprising that the likeness of Christ’s face has inspired Christians to greater knowledge and love of the Lord since the early centuries.Images like the Veronica, the cloth that bears the imprint of Our Lord’s face during His Passion, is just one example of the so called “acheròpita” or image not made by human hands, that have been venerated through the centuries. Perhaps the most famous is the Shroud of Turin, which is the Lord’s burial cloth, that bears the imprint not only of His face, but His whole body and shows the wounds of His Passion. In fact, this image of Christ only became so vividly visible when photographed for the first time in the late 19th century. It is perhaps even more fitting for our age that is so influenced by images, that Christ left a sign of His presence almost 2000 years ago that could only be fully discovered with the use of the technology of our time.During the last 200 years, Christ Himself has called for devotion to His Holy Face to repair for the many blasphemies and offences against Him in our times. These devotions have been communicated through two Sisters, Sr Marie de Saint Pierre (1816-1848) and Blessed Maria Pierina de Micheli (1890-1945), who have each indicated separate devotions to Our Lord’s Holy Face. In 1958, Pope Pius XII declared the feast of the Holy Face of Jesus to be the day before Ash Wednesday (Shrove Tuesday) so that this devotion could be practiced in the Church.

Sr Marie de Saint Pierre, a French Carmelite, received messages from Our Lord calling for devotion to His Holy Face. The sister explained that, on the 25 August 1843, the Lord addressed her saying:‘My Name is everywhere blasphemed. Even children blaspheme.’ And He made me understand that this frightful sin, more than any other, grievously wounds His Divine Heart. By blasphemy, the sinner curses Him to His Face, attacks Him openly, annuls redemption, and pronounces his own condemnation and judgment. Blasphemy is a poisoned arrow ever wounding His Divine Heart. He told me that He wishes to give me a Golden Arrow wherewith to wound His Heart delightfully and heal these wounds inflicted by the sinners’ malice. In 1845, the Lord revealed to Sr Marie that he wanted a work of reparation and that when faithful souls participate in this work they are like St Veronica, who overcame the indifference of the crowd witnessing the Passion, and wiped His face that was filled with spittle, sweat and blood. The Lord told the Sister “I seek Veronicas to wipe and honour My Divine Face which has few adorers.

The Lord dictated a prayer known as the Golden Arrow to the Sister that would act as a means of devotion and reparation:“May the Most Holy, Most Sacred, Most Adorable, Most Mysterious and Unutterable Name of God be praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified, in Heaven, on earth, and in the hells, by all God’s creatures, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.Following the death of Sister Marie, in 1885 Pope Leo XIII established an Archconfraternity of the Holy Face. Some the first members were the family of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, whose religious name was Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face because of this devotion. Blessed Maria Pierina de Micheli and the Medal of the Holy Face Like Sr Marie de Saint Pierre, Blessed Maria Pierina de Micheli was also urged by the Lord to spread devotion to His Holy Face. At just 12 years of age, she was waiting to venerate the Crucifix on Good Friday when she heard Jesus say, “No one gives me a kiss of love on My Face to make amends for the Kiss of Judas.” The future Blessed replied, “I will give you a kiss of love, Jesus.” When she grew older she became a Sister and enjoyed a life time of intimate union with the Lord.In 1938, whilst praying before the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady appeared to her holding a scapular consisting of two pieces of cloth. On one piece was the Holy Face of Jesus and on the other was the Eucharist surrounded by rays. Our Lady told her that:“All who shall wear a Scapular like this and make, if possible, a visit to the Blessed Sacrament every Tuesday in reparation for the outrages that the Holy Face of my Son Jesus received during His Passion and is still receiving in the Holy Eucharist every day,–will be strengthened in the Faith, and will be made ready to defend it,–will overcome all difficulties, internal and external–and they will have a peaceful death under the loving gaze of my Divine Son”.

In 1940, Blessed Maria Pierina realised and gained Ecclesiastical approval the medal of the Holy Face which is used in place of the scapular mentioned by Our Lady. The imprint of Our Lords face was taken from a photograph of the Turin Shroud and so represents the real face of the Lord.Tuesday Devotion to the Holy FaceThe Lord also requested that His Holy Face be honoured each Tuesday and especially on Shrove Tuesday, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which marks the start of Lent. Requesting this devotion, Jesus appeared covered with blood and very sadly said to Blessed Pierina:“Do you see how I suffer? Yet, very few understand me. Those who say they love me are very ungrateful! I have given my heart as the sensible object of my great love to men and I give My Face as the sensible object of my sorrow for all the sins of men. I wish that it be venerated by a special feast on Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. I wish that the feast be preceded by a novena in which the faithful make reparation with me, joining together and sharing in my sorrow. In 1939 Jesus said again:“I wish that My Holy Face be honoured in a particular manner on Tuesdays”.A fitting Lenten Practice As part of the preparations for Lent, it is appropriate to celebrate the feast of the Holy Faceby spending some time before the Blessed Sacrament and reciting the prayers of reparation. In addition, the repetition of this devotion each Tuesday in Lent may be a means of drawing closer to Our Lord during this time of more intense prayer and conversion.Prayer to the Holy Face of JesusHoly Face of my sweet Jesus, living and eternal expression of the love and of the divine martyrdom suffered for the redemption of mankind, I adore Thee and I love Thee.Today and for always I consecrate to Thee my whole being.By the most pure hands of the Immaculate Queen I offer Thee the prayers, actions, and works of this day, in expiation and reparation for the sins of poor creatures.Make me Thy true apostle. May your gentle gaze be ever present to me and, at the hour of my death, grow bright with mercy. Amen.Holy Face of Jesus, look with mercy upon me.

  • The Little Gospel

“And after eight days were accomplished, that the child should be circuмcised, his name was called JESUS, which was called by the angel, before he was conceived in the womb.
(Luke 2:21- words enclosed in the sachet)

Sr. Marie St. Peter, the Carmelite sister who received messages from Our Lord to help establish devotion to His Holy Face. Sr. St. Peter was the portress of the Carmelite Monastery in Tours, France.  People learned that this dear little doorkeeper could console the anxieties and worries of the local people.  Her words of comfort were like a healing balm to their souls, hearts, minds and even bodies.  However, as the news travelled far and wide about her comforting advice, people were inundating the monastery with requests to speak with her to receiving those words that soothe and calm the soul as well as the body. Due to her great concern for keeping the rule of silence and recollection, she prayed for an answer to keep herself within the confines of the Rule, yet still have the ability to console these poor souls in so great a need of consolation and encouragement so as not to become disheartened.  Our Lord answered her prayers with a new sacramental to be distributed to the Faithful to give relief in their spiritual and temporal burdens.
She wrote this: “Our Lord, beholding my desire, gave me the means of gratifying these people and also of comforting them in their maladies, by inspiring me with the pious practice of wearing the Gospel of the Circuмcision.” (Aka “The Little Gospel” or “The Little Sachet”)
    She continued:
Behold in what manner I arranged this practice in conformity with what had been communicated to me on the subject. The devil uses every means in his power to snatch from Our Lord the inheritance won by His Holy Cross; and he is incessantly seeking to rob this Good Shepherd of the sheep purchased at so great a price. To prevent this ravenous wolf from approaching the sheepfold, Jesus desired, as He made me understand, that I should proclaim to all, that His sheep were marked with his Holy Name, and carried about them the Gospel announcing to all nations that the Word Incarnate was named Jesus. My amiable Savior made me understand the depth of virtue contained in that Sacred Name, the very mention of which puts the devil to flight. Those who will have recourse to this act of piety will receive great graces. He told me, also, to place below this Gospel, the words recalling the victory which He had gained over Satan in assuming, through love for us, the Name of Jesus...”
“I was continually occupied in distributing these little gospels, but although I was very assiduous in the work, I could not meet the demand of all who desired them. Our good sisters then kindly offered to help me. I was charmed with this new commerce which redounded to the glory of the Holy Infant. I made a very pretty little gospel for Him, which I placed round the neck of his little statue. As I have said, he told me that these little objects of devotion were not to be sold, but as many wealthy persons wished to purchase them, I placed a small purse in the hand of my little king with the following inscription thereon: “If you wish, give to Jesus; it will enable us to purchase infantile clothing- for him.”
The Divine Child rewarded the good people a hundredfold for their alms, with the graces which he granted them. Quite a considerable amount was thus amassed in His little purse…"
The good sister informs us. furthermore, that Our Lord asked as an alm that these prayers be distributed as soon as possible; at the end of the prayers, He desired should be written: "When Jesus received his name, Satan was vanquished and disarmed.” He permitted me to behold the amount of glory which accrued to Him by celebrating His victory in these words, which make the demons gnash their teeth with rage. He promised that He would bless all who would wear this gospel and would defend them against the attacks of the devil."
The Lord afterward informed her, that as this grace had been drawn from His Heart, that the engraving of the Sacred Heart, together with the instruments of his Passion, should be stamped on the little covering containing this gospel, which would answer the same purpose as a seal on a reliquary, which, guarantees the authenticity of the relic. In honor of the five letters which form the Name of Jesus, and in virtue of His Five Wounds, He promised to grant five special graces to all who would practice this devotion:
    • To preserve them from death by lightning.
    • To protect them against the snares and the malice of the devil.
    • To deliver them from a sudden and unprovided death.
    • To assist them to advance with facility in the path of virtue.
    • That He would give them the grace of final perseverance."
    [color][size][font]
“As this last favor appeared excessive to the pious Carmelite, the following words of Holy Scripture occurred to her mind and reassured her: "Whoever will invoke the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Rom. X. 13.)”
Immediately, many graces were extended to those that took the Little Gospel kept it on them or gave it to the sick, to sinners and even the impenitent on his death bed! It was even given to distraught mothers and widows who feared that their sons were to see active duty, yet, to the amazement of all, all these soldiers seem to have a special protection, and none saw active duty!
The holy sister, Sr. Marie St. Peter, concludes the chapter on the Little Gospel with these words: “By the Little Gospel, He glorified His name, the blessed Name of Jesus; He healed the sick, He brought back sinners to the true fold. By the Work of Reparation, He will glorify the Name of His Father, this Holy Name of the Eternal God, outraged by blasphemers. He will cure the sick, save the sinner, and convert France, that nation formerly the glory of Christian Europe…”
