Buying/Selling of Blessed Items?

  • Does the Church allow rosaries, medals, statues, icons, etc. to be bought and sold? I have heard varying things on this topic. Some say you can sell them as long as you aren't charging for the blessing on it but others say you can't buy or sell anything blessed. One reason I ask is that I am interested in this vintage Miraculous Medal that I don't know whether it is blessed or not. Does this apply to stuff blessed by heretics/schismatics? I ask this since I recently found some cheap byzantine icons that look pretty nice and I don't know if they are blessed or not. A

  • It's perfectly okay to buy and sell such items, but they need to be blessed after you buy them, even if they have been previously blessed. The blessing itself cannot be sold. To try to buy or sell the blessing would be the sin of simony. Make sense?

  • The raccolta states than any blessed article looses its blessing if it is sold.  The blessing belongs to the owner at the time it is blessed.
As an aside, indulgences attached to a blessing on a rosary is lost if it is sold or even lent to someone other than the owner of the rosary.

So it's ok? Does it apply to schismatics "blessing" it?

Can heretics and schismatics bless anything?  A priest is a priest is a priest.  I think if a priest is validly ordained and becomes an heretic or schismatic he can still administer the sacraments in an emergency so maybe the blessing is valid but if he's not validly ordained there is no blessing to begin with.  Just my opinion.
Make your purchase and have it blessed

Yes but I am not sure how efficacious it would be. However this sede priest told me he thinks it is ok to go to an ortho "church" for Holy Water and this is a guy who thinks even Padre Pio may have died a schismatic.
