  • This subject was never covered while I was at the Seminary -- not too surprising, since most seminarians didn't have houses to sell. The professors never mentioned the practice, and no one brought it up as a question either (unfortunately).

So I have this big gap in my knowledge of "how to be a good Catholic" -- though I can make a good guess based on what I DO know.

I know that first of all you need to have a genuine love and devotion to St. Joseph, and not treat him like a magic lamp. On the other hand, a childlike trust in Jesus' father is a good thing, and pleasing to God.

So I suppose I should find a good prayer to say, and perhaps put a St. Joseph statue in my current house and we could pray before it every day.

(Those who promote the statue say you're supposed to dig up the statue and place it in a position of honor in your new home.)

Maybe it's just me, but I don't like putting anyone on the spot -- neither family, nor friends, nor acquaintances, nor saints.

  • To put it somewhat ungracefully (to say the least)... "cut a deal" ... Get a decent statue of St. Joseph for veneration in your home, and simply become devoted. After all, it's a wonderful thing to be especially devoted to the whole Holy Family. St. Joseph has obtained for our family many, many favors when we needed them most. I'm sure Our Lord also has a special place in His heart for him.

I wouldn't, as you say, treat it like a magic lamp. Neither God nor His saints are genies... come and make wishes when you're in need, but put them on the shelf the rest of the time. I'm sure all the saints are ready and willing to help us, but of course, a true devotion and good faith helps.

St. Joseph has been set aside as a patron for these times. More than one pope has wanted to encourage devotion to him. Surely all of us should be devoted to him in addition to Jesus and Mary.

    Here are some devotionals:

    Statue 2

4 pack of cheap posters - devout print

    Another devout print

I'm sure there are others out there, but those are just a few of the cheaper resources, for anyone who wants to start a strong devotion in the home by visually honoring him.

Good art is hard to come by, but these aren't bad!
I renounce any and all of my former views against what the Church through Pope Leo XIII said, "This, then, is the teaching of the Catholic Church ...no one of the several forms of government is in itself condemned, inasmuch as none of them contains anythi
