Title: Bells at the Elevation
Post by: songbird on May 15, 2017, 04:20:50 PM
What is correct when bells at elevation are used?

I heard a bell rung once at genuflection, one long ring at elevation, one bell at next genuflection.

I have a Mass Missal dated 1888.  It states: priest genuflects, 3 bells at the elevation, priest genuflects. Hm?

I don't believe the rubrics on this are written in stone.  I have seen both methods (recently!) used.  This seems to be one that would be based on local customs or the desire of the priest.

Aren't the genufllections an integral part of the Elevation?

The genuflections are required by the rubrics as is the elevation of the Host, though not doing them would not invalidate the consecration.  But the topic is concerning the bells.

I remember an independent priest, who always kept things in question.  He had One ring at the genuflection, one at elevation and one at genuflection.  Then he heard of one bell at genuflection and 3 bells at elevation followed by one bell at genuflection.

I don't have any problem with it, just comparing my marian missal with the 1888, Manual of Prayers, published by order of the 3rd plenary council of Baltimore.  I am very happy that it was added for the purpose of the "ism" of not believing in the True Presence, if that is correct.  My favorite bells are the ones with the birds!

Where I go to mass there are three rings at the elevation.

The ringing style for the elevation bells, seems to be at the server's discretion, provided there's no conflict with the celebrating priest.
