  • Please post favorite hymns + lyrics + sheet music if possible.

    The hymn "Make me a channel of your peace" - though sung mainly by Novus Ordo and Protestant is 100% Catholic.

    The link above is the performance of the Westminster abbey (Protestant) singing at the funeral of Princess Diana.

    The lyrics:

    Quote
    Make me a channel of your peace:
    Where there is hatred, let me bring your love,
    Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
    And where there's doubt true faith in you.
    Make me a channel of your peace:
    Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope,
    Where there is darkness, only light,
    And where there's sadness, ever joy.
    O Master, grant that I may never seek
    So much to be consoled as to console;
    To be understood as to understand,
    To be loved, as to love with all my soul!
    Make me a channel of your peace:
    It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
    In giving of ourselves that we receive,
    And in dying that we are born to eternal life.

    Which is based on the English translation of the French prayer published in the early 20th century:

    Quote
    Seigneur, faites de moi un instrument de votre paix.
    Là où il y a de la haine, que je mette l’amour.
    Là où il y a l’offense, que je mette le pardon.
    Là où il y a la discorde, que je mette l’union.
    Là où il y a l’erreur, que je mette la vérité.
    Là où il y a le doute, que je mette la foi.
    Là où il y a le désespoir, que je mette l’espérance.
    Là où il y a les ténèbres, que je mette votre lumière.
    Là où il y a la tristesse, que je mette la joie.
    Ô Maître, que je ne cherche pas tant à être consolé qu’à consoler, à être compris qu’à comprendre, à être aimé qu’à aimer, car c’est en donnant qu’on reçoit, c’est en s’oubliant qu’on trouve, c’est en pardonnant qu’on est pardonné, c’est en mourant qu’on ressuscite à l’éternelle vie.

    Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
    where there is hatred, let me sow love;
    where there is injury, pardon;
    where there is doubt, faith;
    where there is despair, hope;
    where there is darkness, light;
    and where there is sadness, joy.
    O Divine Master,
    grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
    to be understood, as to understand;
    to be loved, as to love;
    for it is in giving that we receive,
    it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
    and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

    There is no reason why traditional Catholics should be against good hymns with good lyrics, even if they are Protestant in origin. The only possible objection could be that Gregorian chant is to be held first - true, but as part of St. Pius X's call to renew all in Christ, we should not shrink from reappropriating hymns for the greater Glory of God.

    Praise my Soul the King of Heaven (Lauda Anima):

    Quote

    Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;
    to his feet thy tribute bring;
    ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
    evermore his praises sing:
    Alleluia, alleluia!
    Praise the everlasting King.

    Praise him for his grace and favor
    to our fathers in distress;
    praise him still the same for ever,
    slow to chide and swift to bless:
    Alleluia, alleluia!
    Glorious in his faithfulness.

    Father-like, he tends and spares us;
    well our feeble frame he knows;
    in his hand he gently bears us,
    rescues us from all our foes.
    Alleluia, alleluia!
    Widely yet his mercy flows.

    Angels, help us to adore him;
    ye behold him face to face;
    sun and moon, bow down before him,
    dwellers all in time and space.
    Alleluia, alleluia!
    Praise with us the God of grace.

    All Creatures of Our God and King (Lasst uns Erfreuen) - actually a Catholic hymn

    Sorry, only quality version on Youtube is by the Mormons:

    (lyrics may not match 100%)

    Quote
    All creatures of our God and King,
    lift up your voices, let us sing:
    Alleluia, alleluia!
    Thou burning sun with golden beams,
    thou silver moon that gently gleams,
    Refrain:
    O praise him, O praise him,
    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

    Thou rushing wind that art so strong,
    ye clouds that sail in heaven along,
    O praise him, Alleluia!
    Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice,
    ye lights of evening, find a voice, (R)

    Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
    make music for thy Lord to hear,
    Alleluia, alleluia!
    Thou fire so masterful and bright,
    that givest man both warmth and light, (R)

    Dear mother earth, who day by day
    unfoldest blessings on our way,
    O praise him, Alleluia!
    The flowers and fruits that in thee grow,
    let them his glory also show: (R)

    And all ye men of tender heart,
    forgiving others, take your part,
    O sing ye Alleluia!
    Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,
    praise God and on him cast your care: (R)

    And thou, most kind and gentle death,
    waiting to hush our latest breath,
    O praise him, Alleluia!
    Thou leadest home the child of God,
    and Christ our Lord the way hath trod: (R)

    Let all things their Creator bless,
    and worship him in humbleness,
    O praise him, Alleluia!
    Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
    and praise the Spirit, Three in One: (R)

    And our favorite:
    Hail Holy Queen Enthroned Above (Salve Regina Coelitum):
    organ solo:

    Quote
    Hail, holy Queen enthroned above, O Maria.
    Hail, Queen of mercy and of love, O Maria.

    Triumph, all ye cherubim, Sing with us, ye seraphim,
    Heaven and earth resound the hymn:
    Salve, salve, salve Regina!

    Our life, our sweetness, here below, O Maria!
    Our hope in sorrow and in woe, O Maria!

    Triumph, all ye cherubim, Sing with us, ye seraphim,
    Heaven and earth resound the hymn:
    Salve, salve, salve Regina!

    To thee we cry, poor sons of Eve, O Maria!
    To thee we sigh, we mourn, we grieve, O Maria!

    Triumph, all ye cherubim, Sing with us, ye seraphim,
    Heaven and earth resound the hymn:
    Salve, salve, salve Regina!

    Turn then most gracious Advocate, O Maria!
    Toward us thine eyes compassionate, O Maria!

    Triumph, all ye cherubim, Sing with us, ye seraphim,
    Heaven and earth resound the hymn:
    Salve, salve, salve Regina!

    The cause of joy to men below, O Maria!
    The spring through which all graces flow, O Maria!

    Angels, all your praises bring, Earth and heaven, with us sing,
    All creation echoing:
    Salve, salve, salve Regina!

  • O worship the king, all glorious above;
    O gratefully sing his power and his love;
    Our shield and defender the ancient of days;
    Pavilioned in splendour, and girded with praise.

  • O loving wisdom of our God!
    When all was sin and shame,
    A second Adam to the fight
    And to the rescue came.

    O wisest love! that flesh and blood
    Which did in Adam fail,
    Should strive afresh against their foe,
    Should strive and should prevail.

    And that a higher gift than grace
    Should flesh and blood refind
    God's presence and his very self
    and essence all diving.

  • Is this a Catholic hymn?

    I danced on a friday and the sky turned black,
    It's hard to dance with the devil on your back,
    They buried my body and they thought I'd done,
    But I am the life and the dance goes on.

    They took me down and I leapt up high,
    I am the life that will never never die,
    I'll live in you if you'll live me,
    I am the lord of the dance said he.

    It is included in some NO hymnals, but even my NO priest "outlawed" it (20 years ago) as far as use at Mass.

    I think it is a Quaker hymn, but I still like it.
    Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

    Once a year is good.
