Prophecies, The. The 12 lessons taken from the Old Testament which are chanted before the blessing of the Baptismal Font on Holy Saturday morning. The Prophecies treat of Old Testament history and the prophecies. They were read in the early Church to instruct those about to be baptized. On the vigil of Pentecost, when the baptismal font is blessed again, only half of the prophecies are read.

Profession of Faith. A public acceptance and statement of belief in the teachings and doctrines of the Church. Catholics are bound to make a profession of faith in any instance where not to do so would constitute a denial of faith. All baptized adult converts must make a profession of faith. In infant baptism the sponsor makes a profession of faith for the child.
