Dec. 16 marks the anniversary of Naples’ preservation from the 1631 eruption of Mount Vesuvius. It is just one of three days per year the miracle of the liquefaction of St. Januarius’ blood often occurs.
The reputed miracle has not been officially recognized by the Church, but is known and accepted locally and is considered to be a good sign for the city of Naples and its region of Campania.
In contrast, the failure of the blood to liquefy is believed to signal war, famine, disease, or other disasters.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • The blood did not liquefy in 1980 and they had a bad earthquake.  Then it failed again in 2016 and they had more earthquakes.  It also is supposed to liquefy for popes and it did liquefy for Pope Pius IX when he visited.  But when JP2 and B16 visited, it did not liquefy.  I guess St Januarius knows something that the R&R folks don't know.  On the other hand, in 2015 it "half liquefied" for Francis.  I have no idea what that means.  Frank the clown mocked it and it became a public joke.  But maybe it was St Januarius mocking Frank the clown?  St Januarius is the real deal but Frank is not.

  • bad omen? superstition?

Yes, if it’s a sign that is not Christ- Based.

Catholics who die without their scapulars on:  Bad omen for them.

People who die hating the Catholic Church and Our Lady:  A bad omen and end for them.

Men who die unrepentant of their sins, especially blasphemy, guaranteed there will be signs of their bad end to come, for those with eyes to see.

The liquefaction of St. Januarius’s blood, shed under the reign of Diocletian, a good sign for those who can see it.

Diocletian’s inability to sleep in his final days (because of all the Catholics he slaughtered) was a bad omen of his final end.
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi
