  • Maybe members could post what they're planning to do/give up for Lent this year.  As usual, I'm still not sure.

Is there a specific title for this book?

  • “I keep the traditional Irish fasting rules which differ little from the Byzantine Tradition, and are probably the best preserved form of the traditional Western practice.

    • Meat and all animal products, including eggs and dairy, are strictly forbidden between Ash Wednesday and Midnight on Easter Saturday. Oils and fats are also prohibited.
    • 1 meal is permitted per day, not to be taken before sunset, or at least after vespers.
    • On Sundays, the Feast of the Annunciation, Holy Thursday and Feast days of special note  Fasting is relaxed. This means you may eat more than one meal, but abstinence remains fully in force. Ergo, you may eat 3 square meals, but you may not have meat or eggs at those meals. You may have fish and vegetable oils, but no animal fats.
    • The Lenten Fast ends on Holy Wednesday, Holy Thursday is not a day of fasting per se but remains strictly abstinent, but after Midnight on Holy Thursday, the Black Fast or Passion Fast begins.
    • During the Black Fast, no food is taken, ie. No food is consumed on Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
EDIT: I've just read your question regarding Hot Cross Buns. Traditionally they were baked on Good Friday, but they were not eaten until after Mass on Holy Saturday. The Custom was to set the yeast on Holy Thursday, Baked on Good Friday and they were then brought to church on Holy Saturday to be blessed. After Mass, the Black Fast was broken with hot cross buns and butter, which I can tell you, is an incredible treat after Lent!”
May God bless you and keep you

    • “Give up your normal entertainment—music, social media, television, Netflix—and replace that time with prayer, spiritual reading, or quality time with loved ones.
    • Abstain from complaining. Instead, spread some compliments.
    • Pray the Stations of the Cross and meditate on the Lord’s Passion.
    • Offer your illness or suffering for the conversion of sinners.
    • Get out of bed right when your alarm goes off. Or, get up early for extra prayer time!
    • Do some extra chores around the house.
    • Take a shorter or cooler shower than usual.
    • Go out of your way to help a friend or visit the homebound.
    • Offer your day for a specific intention—pray a Memorare once each waking hour for that intention.
    • Stop by an Adoration chapel for face-to-face time with the Lord.”

May God bless you and keep you

    • 1 meal is permitted per day, not to be taken before sunset, or at least after vespers.
This one of two reasons that, in the days before the 20th-century liturgical reforms, the hour of Vespers was moved forward in the day during Lenten ferial days so that one could eat earlier in the day. The other resson for thd change in time was to show that time is turned upside down during Lent.

  • I will abstain from meat ( which is a bit of a sacrifice for me because I like it) but I may keep eggs on the menu for health reasons. My normal diet is low carb so it should be interesting......
Will try not to complain either, but I'm so good at it!

Do you eat low carb breads or tortillas? Low carb + meatless is tough, but one of my favorites right now in that category is avocado toast.
