  • In accordance with Jєωιѕн custom our Lady's parents named her eight days after her birth, and were inspired to call her Mary. The feast of the Holy Name of Mary therefore follows that of her Birthday, as the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus follows Christmas. The feast originated in Spain and was approved by the Holy See in 1513; Innocent XI extended its observance to the whole Church in 1683 in thanksgiving to our Lady for the victory on September 12, 1683 by John Sobieski, king of Poland, over the Turks, who were besieging Vienna and threatening the West. This day was commemorated in Vienna by creating a new kind of pastry and shaping it in the form of the Turkish half-moon. It was eaten along with coffee which was part of the booty from the Turks.

The ancient Onomastica Sacra have preserved the meanings ascribed to Mary's name by the early Christian writers and perpetuated by the Greek Fathers. "Bitter Sea," "Myrrh of the Sea," "The Light Giver," "The Enlightened One," "Lady," "Seal of the Lord," and "Mother of the Lord" are the principal interpretations. These etymologies suppose that the Hebrew form of the name is Maryãm, not Miryãm. From the time of St. Jerome until the 16th century, preferred interpretations of Mary's name in the West were "Lady," "Bitter Sea," "The Light Giver," and especially "Star of the Sea." Stella Maris was by far the favored interpretation. The revival of Hebraic studies, which accompanied the Renaissance, led to a more critical appraisal of the meanings assigned to Our Lady's name. Miryãm has all the appearance of a genuine Hebrew name, and no solid reason has been discovered to warrant rejecting the Semitic origin of the word. The Hebrew name of Mary, Miryãm, (in Latin Domina) means lady or sovereign; this Mary is in virtue of her Son's sovereign authority as Lord of the World. We call Mary our Lady as we call Jesus our Lord, and when we pronounce her name we affirm her power, implore her aid and place ourselves under her protection.

  • Today, the 12th of September is the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary. It has been a universal Roman Rite feast since 1684, when Pope Innocent XI included it in the General Roman Calendar to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Vienna in 1683

As to what is at stake, I link to a Fr. Z post that lays it out quite neatly in his post titled The final target of the Third Hijra: Rome and the Catholic Church. (see here)

Today more than ever, we need to go to Church, pray and do penance. Please also keep the Hungarians, the Poles and the Czech in your prayers. They are on the front lines and heroically resisting against much larger and better funded forces, both internal and external, of heretics, heathens and infidels.

Background of the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary from Wikipedia:

    History

The feast day began in 1513 as a local celebration in Cuenca, Spain, celebrated on 15 September. In 1587 Pope Sixtus V moved the celebration to 17 September. Pope Gregory XV extended the celebration to the Archdiocese of Toledo in 1622.[3] In 1666 the Discalced Carmelites received permission to recite the Divine Office of the Name of Mary four times a year. In 1671 the feast was extended to the whole Kingdom of Spain.

Before the Battle of Vienna in 1683, John III Sobieski had placed his troops under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the following year, to celebrate the victory, Pope Innocent XI added the feast to the General Roman Calendar, assigning to it the Sunday within the octave of the Nativity of Mary.

The reform of Pope Pius X in 1911 restored to prominence the celebration of Sundays in their own right, after they had been often replaced by celebrations of the saints. The celebration of the Holy Name of Mary was therefore moved to 12 September.[7] Later in the same century, the feast was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969 in the reform of the Calendar by Pope Paul VI, as something of a duplication of the 8 September feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary,[8] but it did not cease to be a recognized feast of the Roman Rite, being mentioned in the Roman Martyrology on 12 September. In 2002 Pope John Paul II restored the celebration to the General Roman Calendar.[

If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • Eight days after the birth of the Blessed Virgin, Her holy parents, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, inspired by God, gave Her the name of Mary. The name Mary means Lady, and also Star of the Sea.

Just to say Her holy name is a prayer. It gives everyone who does so favor with God and power over the devil. Pope Innocent XI, recently beatified by the Catholic Church, set up the feast of the Holy Name of Mary in 1683, to thank Her for the victory which the Catholic army under John Sobieski, King of Poland, gained over the Turks (Mohammedans), who were trying to sack Vienna and move in and conquer all the Catholics of the west.

Mary's name occurs in the first part and in the second part of the Hail Mary. In the middle of the Hail Mary, one speaks the Holy Name of Jesus.

Great apostles of the Holy Name of Mary have been: Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. says “O most holy Virgin Mary, your name is so sweet and so admirable that one cannot say it without becoming inflamed with love toward God and toward you.
Another great apostle of the Holy Name of Mary is Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, Her namesake.

In today's Epistle for the Mass of The Holy Name of Mary (Eccl. 24:23-31) we read “In me is all grace of the way and of the truth, in me is all hope of life and of virtue.” as Saint Alphonsus relates, “Our Life, our Sweetness and our Hope! At times, when it seems as though there is no help and you are beyond hope, turn to Her to intercede for you, for Her Son cannot refuse Her anything that She wants. Her Heavenly Spouse and Her Creator, are eagerly waiting to fill Her every wish, especially for Her children. Be thou then Her child that She may be unto thee your mother.”
"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

  • Come, O Mary, come with the sweetness that always accompanies thee.  Come to me in my trials.  Come to encourage me and to bring me the grace of thy Divine Son, Jesus.  Dearest Mother, no sooner have I confided to thee my sorrows, than already I feel consoled.  Thy name alone is a balm for my wounds.

    --Thomas a Kempis
