  • I was talking to a fellow parishioner last weekend and Amazing Grace came up. It was suggested that this hymn was written specifically against Catholicism. I tried to find something supporting this online, but most accounts attribute it solely as a conversion story of John Newton. Yes, he was converting to Christianity via Anglicanism, but I didn't find anything suggesting it was intentionally anti-Catholic.

Has anyone heard of this to be a specifically anti-Catholic hymn? Of course, it doesn't sound Catholic even if it technically can be reconciled with the Faith. I was just wondering if this is a typical wishy-washy Prot hymn or something more serious/malicious than that.
