Advice?

  • So I got a friend from school who I just started seeing more again in the hallway. I found his phone number again recently by going through my 8th grade yearbook. I do remember hearing him take Our Lord's name in vain a decent amount when I was there but I was not strong enough to rebuke then and there back then. I am wondering if I should text him about it and how I should go about it. I am thinking I should not just say it then and there so it isn't confrontational. If I were to text him I'd be like "Hey what's up wanna see something funny?" then I would maybe send him something funny but not obscene and be like "Okay don't take God's name in vain in reaction to this but here you go." Another thing I had thought about was just printing out a reminder not to take God's name in vain and taping it on a fence where he is bound to walk by. However there is a small chance I may have sufficiently reminded him but it seems kinda unlikely to me since in 8th grade I wrote reminders on desks and stuff like that and may have said something very quietly. I also remember him not liking the Month of the Sacred Heart cause it is a Catholic thing iirc.

  • When I hear someone use the Lord's name in vain I at the least mentally pray "sit nomen Domini benedictum...  vade retro Satana!"
Fairly recently in a sermon the Priest said that when he hears people use the Lord's name in vain he bows his head and, in as gentle a voice as he can muster, says "blessed be the name of Jesus" and continues with the conversation.
Patience is a conquering virtue. The learned say that, if it not desert you, It vanquishes what force can never reach; Why answer back at every angry speech? No, learn forbearance or, I'll tell you what, You will be taught it, whether you will or not.

  • I tell it to their face.  “ Please don’t take the Lord’s name in vain”.

Create a mini pamphlet on why not take the Lord’s name in vain and mail it to them. It is first of 10 Commandment.

To live with the Saints in Heaven is all bliss and glory....To live with the saints on Earth is just another story!  (unknown)

  • My advice would be,
if there is no relationship between the two of you now, a correction from so long ago wouldn’t be as readily received as it would have been in the moment.
You could instead ask God to have mercy on that individual by name, and then make it a point to say a prayer in reparation to the Holy Name of Jesus whenever you hear His Name blasphemed. Have a daily devotion to The Holy Name as well to repair for past, current and future offenses.
Also, when you encounter this very common problem again, have a short fraternal correction ready to go for those taking God’s Name in vain.
