  • The Vatican on Monday formally accepted a docuмent summarizing evidence that the Rev. Edward J. Flanagan, who founded Omaha’s Boys Town, should be canonized a saint.
The act is a significant step in Flanagan’s cause for sainthood, said Deacon Tim McNeil, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Omaha. The docuмent, called the Positio, was written by a Vatican official after he studied scores of records the archdiocese sent to Rome in 2015, McNeil said. The records were presented to show that Flanagan lived a life of heroic virtue.
The official decided that the cause for sainthood was worth backing and that he could write an argument for proceeding with it, McNeil said.

“He could have decided that he couldn’t support the cause, that there’s not anything here,” McNeil said.
If he had, the effort — which officially started in 2012 — would have effectively ended.
The Positio included a letter of support from Omaha Archbishop George Lucas, who met with the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in January to personally endorse acceptance of the Positio and the eventual beatification and canonization of Flanagan. The Boys Town founder has already been designated a Servant of God because his life and works are being considered for sainthood.

The cause must now pass through three more phases before Flanagan can be declared venerable: It must be approved by historical consultants of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, then theological consultants, and finally all of the bishops and cardinals who are members of the congregation.

If the case for Flanagan’s heroic virtue survives all three stages, the Congregation will recommend that the pope declare him venerable. The next stage would be beatification, when Flanagan would be declared “blessed,” then finally, canonization, or sainthood. The last two steps require proof of a miracle that occurred through Flanagan’s intercession.
Members of the Omaha-based Father Flanagan League Society of Devotion, the group behind Father Flanagan’s cause, have been praying through Flanagan for those miracles for several years. The group has 40,000 devotees spread across 20 countries.
“The archbishop’s visit to the Vatican speaks volumes to the importance of this cause for the Catholic Church,” the league’s president, Steven Wolf, said Monday in a press release.

  • Darwin Ramos was a street child who lived in Manila (Philippines) who was afflicted with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He died in his youth and in spite of his poverty and illness, he was a master of Joy for those who knew him. Since his death in 2012, his reputation for holiness has not diminished and his life has been an example to emulate for many Catholics. The opening of the cause for his beatification and canonization was requested in the diocese of Cubao (Philippines). More and more people ask his intercession and have testified to many favors received.

  •  The ‘secret preacher of block 17’ who witnessed to Christ in a nαzι cσncєnтrαтισn cαмρ was beatified this week in Limburg, Germany.
Blessed Father Richard Henkes was a German Pallottine priest denounced by the nαzιs for his outspoken preaching. He died in Dachau cσncєnтrαтισn cαмρ in 1945 while caring for prisoners sick with typhus.
“The real reformers of the Church are the blessed and the saints,” said Cardinal Kurt Koch at Henkes’ beatification on Sept. 19. “For we can only achieve the utmost externally, in structural terms, when we are also prepared to strive to achieve our utmost internally, in faith.”
“Love is not without sacrifice,” Koch said. “The Christian martyrdom is only real if it is realized as the supreme act of love for God and for one’s brothers and sisters.”
From the pulpit and the classroom, Fr. Henkes spoke out against the nαzι ideology and condemned the regime’s crimes against human dignity, focusing one homily on their killing of the disabled. Henkes was first denounced in 1937 for one of his homilies, for which he had to stand trial.

Fr. Flanagan may have been long gone when this happened, but there is still a pall hanging over Boys Town as many questions pertaining to its involvement in the Franklin Scandal have gone unanswered.

Yes, it's hard to say.  While Ignatius was a great saint, the Jesuits went south quickly after his death.  And a charity called "Boys Town" might as well be a signal beacon for pedophiles everywhere.  Were there greater mass communications back in the day, such as these might have glommed onto St. John Bosco himself.

The New Order of Pharisees "canonized" "Pope" "Saint" Sodomite without even blinking an eye. How is the cause of "St." Judas the Great advancing? Let's also remember that the SSPX "canonized" the "Saint of the Sanhedrin."

Just fine, actually.  They've started the rehabilitation process by denying that he's necessarily in hell.

  • The Vatican has approved the authenticity of a miracle through the intercession of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, clearing the way for his beatification.

As Archbishop of Warsaw from 1948 until his death in 1981, and primate of Poland, Cardinal Wyszynski was a focal point of Catholic resistance to Communism. He was also influential in the rise of Pope John Paul II to a position of leadership in the Polish Church and eventually the Holy See.
The miracle attributed to the Polish cardinal’s intercession was the inexplicable healing of a young woman who had terminal cancer.
In other decrees made public on October 3, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints also:
—announced the approval of miracles through the intercession of Francesco Mottola (1901—1969), an Italian priest; and Alessandra Sabattini (1961—1984), an Italian lay woman.
—recognized the martyrdom of Juan Roig y Diggle, killed in the Spanish cινιℓ ωαr; and Archbishop Augusto Cesare Bertazzoni, who died in Italy in 1972.
—proclaimed the “heroic virtue” of Francisca del Nino Jesus (born Maria Nativida Sanchez Villoria), a Spanish religious.

  • Recall that Warsaw Archbishop Stanislaw Wielgus resigned under pressure. It was feared that revelations about Wielgus' collaboration with communists would lead to deeper investigation implicating another suspiciously surviving Pole.  Consider Wojtyla's 1983 role in suppressing opposition to the Communist regime of Jaruzelski. Wojtyla was no opponent of Communism, he thrived under Communism and advanced Marxist themes.

  • We are talking about Polish clerics and why some thrived (collaborated with the Communists) and some died (martyrs who refused to collaborate).

Those clerics who 'thrived' aren't found among the saints. Many of the clerics who collaborated did so under coercion. They are not saints. They are among the reasons that we pray for the poor souls in Purgatory.
The saints are among those who resisted, like Cardinal Wyszynski.
