Pope Francis appointed Hungarian Cardinal Péter Erdö as his special envoy to the solemn commemoration of the 600th anniversary of the baptism of Samogitia, a region in northwest Lithuania. The commemoration took place from August 2 to 4 during a diocesan Eucharistic congress in Telsiai.
In his Latin-language letter for the occasion, Pope Francis referred to Samogitia as “the last land of pagans in Europe” and said that “even in the difficult times of the Reformation and the Soviet occupation,” the area’s Catholics offered “a most beautiful testimony of faith” as well as “of fidelity towards the Successors of Peter.”
