1955 Missal

Why didn’t Archbishop Lefebvre choose the 1955 Missal? Why doesn’t the SSPX ask Rome for permission to use it?

These Nine (at the time) SSPX priests asked a similar question (among others) in their Letter to ABL back in 1983:

Surely, it would not be necessary to seek permission from Rome to offer Holy Mass of 1955.

Thank you, 2vermont for that pdf letter of the nine. Very informative. Explains a lot about the gradual progress of SSPX compromise and progression towards Rome. Sad indeed!

Interesting I did not know that the Society originally followed the liturgy of St Pius X. What missal does the resistance use?

Did the SSPX, at the outset, use the 1962 Missal, or an earlier one?
