Was this term ever used before Vatican 2? I assume not since the idea of sects being in "partial Communion" is a post Vatican 2 novelty. I am curious if this was used by anyone but modernists before V2 or who made up the term. I do remember an indulgences pre V2 prayer calling Eastern Schismatics "separated brethren" so who knows.
