...that's what a friend of mine cried out as he hysterically laughed when I showed him this Collect for a woman with child, found in an English translation of the Sarum Missal. He found it humorous because of the reference to the Prophet Jonas and the whale, which implied (at least to him) an analogy between said whale and a woman with child. Not a flattering suggestion at all, and I suspect if this bloke ever marries he wouldn't appreciate me bringing this up at the wedding toast (if I would have the audacity to do so, that is).

Doctrinal side note:

The Collect's antiquity is seen in what could be interpreted as the dated and now anathematized view of the "sanctification" of the Blessed Virgin at the Incarnation (which has now given placed to the infallibly defined dogma of the Immaculate Conception), although one could say the Collect merely alludes to the immeasurable increase of grace and charity that filled the Virgin's soul at the Incarnation, something which is not incompatible with the belief in the Immaculate Conception since the initial plenitude of grace that the Blessed Virgin received when she began existing did indeed increase ineffably from hour to hour (especially at the Incarnation, Nativity, at the foot of the Cross, and at the Cenacle with the Apostolic College when the Holy Ghost was sent unto them) until her holy dormition.

Notice also the importance and urgency wherewith the Sacrament of Holy Baptism is regarded in this Collect, which seems to be the chief object thereof. Not a long life of health and prosperity, but a life of grace infused by Baptism that leads to everlasting life in Heaven, is what the Collect prays for the unborn child.
