Fox News’ Conor Powell has some uplifting Easter news for Christians of devout faith. The Edicule shrine in Jerusalem — one of Christianity’s holiest places where the tomb of Jesus lies — has been cleaned and reopened to the public after a painstaking $4 million restoration.
The Edicule rests in the center of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which itself is one of the world’s oldest religious sites, featuring a building that was constructed in the 12th century, sitting on the remains of the previous church and Jerusalem’s Old City that date all the way back to the 4th century.
According to Orthodox Christian and Roman Catholic belief, the Edicule houses the ancient cave that Jesus’ body was entombed in and resurrected from. Inside the Edicule, visitors can kneel at a marble niche covering the bench that Jesus’ body was placed upon.
A Greek restoration team consolidated rocks in the Edicule and prevented its possible collapse; new grout was injected to strengthen the core of the structure, and a window was cut into the shrine so Pilgrims are now able to view the bare stone of the actual burial cave.
The repair work took 10 months, and there’s still some work underground that needs to be done to modernize plumbing running through the site. But watch as Powell shows actual footage from inside the Edicule and the amazed reactions of recent visitors.

  • It is wonderful that this work was finally done.  From what I have read, the Edicule was in danger of collapse over 70 years ago when the British authorities installed the scaffolding around it, but no permanent restoration was performed until now.

While the Edicule is now secure, I have also read, unfortunately, that the foundation of the church itself also needs repairs, and could be in danger of collapse if nothing is done.
