What was World War One about? How did it start? Who won? And what did they win?

Not having watched the videos, from what I've seen in my limited knowledge of that war was the accomplishment of a few things;

1. The elimination of  the last truly Christian (Orthodox) monarchy (Russia).
2. The elimination of the last truly Catholic monarchy (Hapsburgs).
3. The elimination of the last truly Moslem empire. (Ottomans)
4. The beginning of the global commie movement (Soviets)
5. The beginning of the state of Israel ( Balfour Declaration)


Also, the irony is that Germany , who supposedly lost the war, NEVER really surrendered, which was Hitler's contention and argument which eventually brought him to power and eventually started world war II. also, it was the start of the Anglo-American rise to global hegemony and the the beginning of the decline of Pax Britannica. Britain was no longer the big boys on the block. France was also basically done on the world scene. European colonialism days were numbered as well.

There were also huge advancements in modern warfare, fighting and engaging in battle would never be the same.

And neither would be the world.

Alaric:  My family left the area of Bavaria, Zwiebruken in 1847.  I have read some of history, but maybe you can tell me why my family left.  I know of Napoleon, hard times was mentioned.  I know of a famine.  My family was catholic. Settled in Logansport Indiana.  I was told by a librarian the reason was war. Well, I thought maybe that could be explained. My family was black smiths.
