IIRC there are three stages of drunkenness: physical impairment--->partial mental impairment--->total mental impairment/loss of reason.
The third being a mortal sin if reached deliberately or through willful negligence. The first and second are generally not unless there are aggravating circuŠ¼stances such as someone who is prone to commit mortal sins while partially impaired, like sins against the 6th/9th commandments, blasphemy, violence, etc
I think alcohol and marijuana are two different animals. If we're talking about recreational marijuana (not medical varieties for pain management), it's hard to reason how it could only be venially sinful. You can get a high from just one inhalation (so I assume. I've never tried it.) and is that not the only reason for using it? For the high? With alcohol, there is a partial state of loss of reason before the full mortally sinful state of drunkenness. With marijuana, you go straight to the state of mental impairment. Anyway, the article below explains it well.
I really don't understand how a lot of traditional Catholics exonerate the use of pot for relaxation. (even some priests think it is fine or use it). It's a drug like any other. I think it causes much damage to souls, and to society as a whole.
It's not the same as having a glass of wine or a cigarette/cigar/pipe. And obviously it is not the same as Pope St Pius X's "snuff box" which didn't give him a high. I believe that was just powdered tobacco.
