• Despite her consistent emphatic condemnations of the evils of Judaism, the Church always observed, though the Jєωs did not observe, a policy of “Live and let live,” a strict policy against forced conversions and extra-legal violence. The policy was articulated in numerous papal proclamations as “Sicut Judaeis non.” Jєωιѕн citations of Sicut Judaeis non typically revel in the freedom guaranteed Jєωs by the Church. Utterly lacking in Jєωιѕн citations, such as the citation in Jєωιѕн-owned Wikipedia, is the reciprocal duty of the Jєωs: “Just as license ought not to be presumed for the Jєωs in their ѕуηαgσgυєs beyond what is permitted by law, so in those points conceded to them, they ought to suffer nothing prejudicial.” Pope St. Gregory the Great in Edward A. Synan, The Popes and the Jєωs in the Middle Ages (New York: The Macmillan Company, 1965), p. 46. http://judaism.is/the-church-on-the-Jєωs.html#sicutjudaeisnon

The oldest complete version of Sicut Judaeis non is from Pope Alexander III:

“Sicut Judaeis non” promulgated by Pope Alexander III, September 14, 1199 A.D. in The Popes and the Jєωs in the Middle Ages by Edward Synan, (NY, NY: Macmillan Company) 1965, Paperback Edition 1967. Appendix VI, pp. 229-232.

  • Excellent post with a beautiful citation.

On a related matter, what do you think of the Midrashic Three Oaths?

The Gemara quotes R. Yossi ben R. Chanina:

ג' שבועות הללו למה אחת שלא יעלו ישראל בחומה ואחת שהשביע הקדוש ברוך הוא את ישראל שלא ימרדו באומות העולם ואחת שהשביע הקדוש ברוך הוא את אומות העולם שלא ישתעבדו בהן בישראל יותר מדאי.

Why/What are these Three Oaths? One, that Israel should not go up [to the land of Israel] in a wall {i.e. en masse, Rashi interprets: forcefully}. Two, the Holy One adjured Israel not to rebel against the nations of the world. Three, the Holy One adjured the nations that they would not oppress Israel too much.
